Birthday Cake for One Year Old

My son is going to be one very soon and I'm stuck in regards to a birthday cake.I was tempted to go and buy him one but the other half thinks the prices are stupid! On reflection, I remember my dad making me one nearly every year and how I loved it so I'm thinking this could be a good tradition to start with my son.I'm not a bad baker.I can do cakes, but lack imagination and also I want to do something really special for him ( but not sothing too hard ).Never decorated a cake in my life which is scaring me but I know its something I would give a go.
Any suggestions?

We paid £6 for my son's Mickey Mouse clubhouse cake from Asda. That was for his 1st birthday just over a week ago.

Would it be cheaper than that to make one?

No idea! Was going to get a Costco cake to give out to friend/family, but then wanted another one just for us greedy three.

Yes :D 16 years ago for my DD's first bithday I made a clown cake. I made a plain sponge in an oval gratin dish (lined with parchment), covered in white icing. I then coloured roll icing and cut out shapes to make a face and a hat.

  • I wouldn't worry too much about having to do something fancy, I've always thought a simple iced homecake cake is so much nicer, made with love - you can't go wrong with sponge, icing and candles. A simple decoration could be cutting out balloon shapes from rolled icing?

I wouldn't know, I never even got a piece!

I passed 3 slices to my aunty, for her, uncle and cousin and the greedy mare ate all 3, so it must have been nice! :rotfl:

You made one 16 years ago??

I think prices have gone up slightly since then! :rotfl::rotfl:

As he's one I'm pretty sure he's not going to turn his nose up if it's not a three-tier fully detailed Thomas train - I wouldn't worry about clever shapes, fancy icing etc. - good homebaked cake, bit of glace icing on the top, jam or butter icing or both in the middle, candle. That's a birthday cake.

It is, after all, for him and not technically for all the grownups who'll be after a piece!

Something like this would be easy enough. I did similar for my twins' first birthday but iced their names on each cake instead.
