Seeing things you didn't win on ebay :(

I also agree that to have won in the first place people ptut such a lot of time and effort in, and as a result should be ble to do as they wish with the prizes.
I'm a fairly new single parent so things are tight, and I've had a really rough time of it the last 8 months or so, and in some way i feel the fantastic wins I've had are due to karma making up for that!!! lol
The world cup package and spa vouchers i've won are giving me a welcome break with my mum after not having had a break for a very very long time!!!
The smartphone, drench win and wii i've recently won are all prizes i'd love to keep but finances mean I am going to be selling them to family/friends (some of who i tried to give them to but would only have if they could pay me for them-which actually really helps me out!), but I don't feel bad about this-I'm doing it so I can treat my two beautiful children :-)
No-one should be judged, you put the effort in-you do as you pleaseX

I won a 2week holiday to India (as most of you know as I am always harping on about it)
We went in february, i had never been abroad before!!!! I begrudgingly sold a handful of wins on ebay after I had sifted through all my hoards of stuff which was left over from what I did not give my DD as prezzies for crimbo (she had more than I would have ever been able to afford if it wasn't for comping).
The prizes I sold were like others have said ones which were runner up prizes and i had no need or want for. And obviously, I knew I could get something for placing it on ebay.
The money I made selling these paid for my passport, visa, and also a small quanity of spending money.
I hate parting with ANY wins and im even hesitant handing them over as gifts! Without comping I would go insane! I cannot work due to health reasons and when a win comes through the door I feel proud that I am "contributing" somewhat to the household.
When wins come in my daughters name she always opens them as the look on her face when she opens it is priceless (however if I have won duplicates of certain comps i.e Instants win comps, I will give them away or flog it on ebay).
I've not sold any high end prizes on ebay as everything I have been lucky enough to win has replaced a clapped out item or been a luxury I could have only dreamt of owning in a million years!
I sold one gay dvdsomething I do not even remember entering! Glad I did as it went for £15
I also sold a complete set of girls aloud t-shirts as I was lucky enough to have multiple wins when that kitkat comp was running. These all went for pennies but someone was rubbing their hands and I was happy to send them.
I have donated lesser value items e.g books, cds, dvds etc which I watched/read once some even brand new which I must have entered in a sleepy comping state at ridiculous times in the mornings lol
The school always harp on about bringing allsorts in for raffles, fates, etc etc and my daughter would have to of gone empty handed if I hadnt of rumaged in my box of tricks for something suitable for her to take in....
I have just sorted out a few more items to list over the next week which havent seen the light of day since winning them.... money made will hopefully go towards paying the remainder for my daughters Brownie Trip this coming school holiday.
I cant be bothered with ebay, and only rumage for things to sell when times are hard. I am a good saver and have no debts, but some things you just cannot plan for in your budget
I have started back comping after a long break away from it as xmas will soon be open us and I am hoping to win some amazing bits and pieces for my ickle savage this year.
She really wants a trampoline..... I would have no worries selling a win in order to be in the position to get her onePle'ma an bysva?

I do not have a problem with people selling items at all. I have sold a few things for example some luxury hotel vouchers that I won - we would have loved to have gone but could not justify spending that much money on a couple of nights away.
It would be the same if I won a car, I would love a new car but I am not in a position to justify keeping it.
I do not think that it is fair if people enter competitions that are for children or for example a holiday or concert that they cannot go on / to but it annoys me more when people complain about comps eg the prize is a holiday but people moan that there is no spending money or a car and that the insurance is not included0 -
I think once a prize has been won it's the property of the person that won it and theres to do whatever they like with. Personally I enter any comp that I like the look of the prize sometimes I keep the prize, sometimes I give them to friends/family and sometimes I sell them on ebay. I won a PC last year and it took over a year to arrive I gave up waiting and had to buy myself a new laptop so when it arrived I sold it on ebay (it was worth £1000 but I sold it for £500 - so someone got a bargain) It would have been a waste to have it just sat there. I have also sold DVD's as I have rented and watched it in between entering and winning it - I never watch films twice so if no mates want it I will sell it on. I can't see anything wrong with it.0

I have sold wins on ebay as it pays for our holiday (along with all my other junk I sell on there
).
I don't enter for tickets that I can't use and have been really lucky that the two lots of tickets I have won (circus/tiesto) this year I could use and had a brilliant time.
I only enter holidays in my mums name as I work weekends and have to book my holidays so far in advance it makes it difficult. Good job I have entered them in her name as she won one this year. She is taking my dad to france and really excited about it.
I have entered for kids comps because they go to one of my neighbours 10 grandkids (she struggles with money and gives them as presents she would otherwise struggle to afford). I also love to send packages to postpals so kids wins more often than not go there. I would struggle to justify buying kids toys otherwise and it means I can send something descent along with a letter that will put a smile on thier face. I have had some really lovely thank you cards back (that I wasn't expecting) that I keep.0 -

its the same with the drinks ones - they ask you to confirm your date of birth - do they ever check it after you win to make sure you are 18?
Great thread BTW - nice to see how other people think :T
I've been asked to prove my age for some crabies alcoholic ginger beer - think that's the only 18+ thing i've ever won though.

Interesting thread. I guess most of the conmps I enter are for things I want or at least think i wantI tend to give most of my wins away (i'm not very good at keeping things for myself and it makes other people happy) so my mum is doing very well out of my comping habit!
However I have sold quite a few things and with things like DVDs I will often watch them and then sell them or by the time the prize actually turns up i've already watched it from lovefilm so sell it on.
I don't see a problem with selling most things. I don't really get people entering for tickets that they have no intention of using and I think entering for holidays which you know you can't go on for whaever reasons (date restrictions etc..) seems silly. But if people want to enter for them that's up to them
With vouchers I would probably enter comp and sell them for a store I would rather spend my money in too.
Have to say I haven;t really won anything that would make me loads of money though - wish I had lol!2008: £783.12 - 2009: £6,401.15 - 2010: £4,230.61 - 2011: £8720 - 2012: £2,041.89
2013: £134.960 -
I have sold prizes in the past, but mainly because they were things I wasn't going to use - makeup that wouldn't suit me for example. I have a couple of DVD wins waiting for Amazon at the moment, we have a very MSE car (cost us £30!) but she has her MOT coming up and without my extra money we won't be able to keep her on the road.
I'm also aiming to be debt-free by my 30th (December) and unless ITV find my phone number, I'm going to be doing it by scrimping and saving and, yes, selling things on Ebay/Amazon.
On the topic of comps for kids, I never enter comps which ask for the childs age, but have won on comps which are from parenting websites. I don't have kids, but keep these wins for my nephews/niece. I do wish there weren't age limits on a lot of the Dr Who comps though....I really want a sonic screwdriver0 -
I sold My Thomas Cook Vouchers on Ebay after being given the idea from someone as i would never of thought about it.
I really wanted the prize too but my son school trip was more important then me jetting off some where so the sale Paid for his school trip...
I hope i never have to sell wins again as i like my winsWaiting to win an ITV competition.....:A0 -
I've only started comping regularly in the past month and only one win so far. (The Koala.) But if I won something and found I needed the money for something else, I would happily sell it. I don't enter competitions in the mind frame "If I win, I'll sell". I enter competitions of things I want at the time. But things change and if I did win something, I may be in a different situation to when I entered.
I don't see any problems with people winning and selling on. (Although yes, if you enter purely to sell on, it's a little unfair. But not against the rules.)0 -

In a lot of cases it will be against the rules as the terms and conditions will have clauses in them saying something along the lines of "prizes may not be resold" or "prizes are non-transeferable".
In competitions where this is the case I feel that if you choose to enter then you are agreeing to the terms and should not sell prizes.
Take the recent Highland Spring tennis giveaway. The terms very clearly stated "The prizes cannot be sold for financial gain" yet just a quick ebay search brings up loads of tickets that are from the Highland Spring competition. It really annoys me that people so blatantly break the competition rules just to make some cash. It makes me wonder what other lengths they go to to break the rules as well.
It would be a lot fairer if the winners who could not go tell the promoter and let them be passed on (or even follow the example of those generous people who occasionally give away unwanted tickets on the "I won" board).
