Ex-vegetarian seeks meaty advice

After 10 years I am no longer a veggie... except I am rather unprepared for this meat-eating lark!!

I got a bit carried away when I went shopping and could do with some help using ...

a tin of pilchards in tomato sauce (something other than putting on toast!)

2 chicken legs (thought I could roast them? Or any other ideas.)

Turkey rashers (like bacon except nothing like bacon... lol!)

I have a slow cooker, and all the things you expect to find in a kitchen!! I also have a very tasteless yellow marrow - any dishes I could make it dissapear into??

(Definately going back to growing traditional green courgettes next year - mine are revolting  )

So, any suggestions?

Hi gemma, just thought I'd say hello as a fellow meat eater who was veggie for 17 years. I started eating fish when pregnant and then as I was weaning my son just found myself eating meat again too. I have found the deliaonline.com website great for searching for recipies to make with a particular ingredient. Funnily enough someone gave me a huge marrow yesterday, sadly delia let me down but found 2 nice recipies on bbc.co.uk/food. One is for marrow stuffed with couscous, chorizio and red pepper and the other is just chucks of marrow roasted with rosemary.
We try to eat veggie at least twice a week still in the house (main meals) and also eat a lot of fish but one of my favourite meats since I turned back has been pork fillet.
There are lots of nice recipies for casseroled chicken pieces, theres one I do with onion, chopped tomatoes, peppers and also some bits of bacon - so you could try this using 1 or 2 of the turkey rashers? its nice with pasta.
Or maybe you could stuff the marrow with rice, turket rashers etc....

Karyn - snap! Started eating fish when found out I was pregnant, so much about omega everywhere, and if i'm going to eat fish then I choose to eat meat too. Sadly not pregnant anymore, but still trying.

I now love fish ... but only white fish (cod etc) in batter. Sadly its the oily fish (trout etc) that have the omega and they dont come in batter :-( Hence the pilchards! And I *really* dislike the idea of bones in my food!

Thanks for the sites - will have a look!

Hmmm....can't really help with what you've bought, but I think you need to ease yourself back into eating meat gently. Try a nice Cauliflower cheese with bacon. :D

Oh, and you don't have to bother about the bones in the pilchards, they're very soft and wont hurt at all. Unless you don't like the texture. ;)
If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.

You could always use the chicken in the slow cooker with the marrow - make a sort of stew type dish...bit of white wine, few other veggies, stock cube.....

Or wrap the chicken in the bacon and cook off in the oven.....

gemmaj - I'm a pescatarian (fish only :D .... health reasons .... can't afford to buy organic meat as I'm a student!). Why did you go back to meat incidentally?

Anyway, pilchards in tomato sauce - I just chuck them in tomato based pasta sauces or add them to a salad to make it a bit more interesting. I don't think I've ever had them on toast!

I was a veggie for 11 years and gave up when I was pregnant with my DD2. She was much healthier than DD1 when she was born but I don't know if that was anything to do with having a balanced diet. I didn't know the difference between pork, lamb, beef or anything when I gave up being a veggie. To me it was all the same.

Have you got a slow cooker? You can buy cheap cuts of meat and cook them slowly in a sauce and they come out really tender.

  • I'm glad I'm not the only ex vegetarian around! I was veggie for 7 years and fell off the wagon while watching banger racing and had a hotdog! No pregnancy reasons for me! I found eating chicken the easiest to start off with and still don't really eat red meat.

I am told that the cure for vegetarianism is a bacon sandwich.

sod easing yourself into it. Get a mixed grill down you.
Look at meat as 4 legged religion, Jesus died for our sins and animals die for our meals..

Like Raffles said, get a bacon sandwich down you and never look back.
