So which are generally considered the 'best' CFL bulbs?

For instant light, go LED. More efficient, no mercury, last longer, instant full light - more expensive, though.0

I agree with Dave, Megaman have a long lifespan in my experience too.0

Megaman or Philips, both have worked well and lasted well in my house. I have a selection of old bulbs from both (some Philips from the early 90s even), and their newer ones too. Megaman are best for odd shape bulbs like R63 spotlights, while Philips are good for inexpensive generic shape bulbs. The new ones from both are instantly bright when turned on.0
