  • I love my mums... but she does it differently to most here.

She dry fries the mince and then fries an onion in a little oil. Puts both in a sauce pan with boiling water and season and leaves to cook for a while.

Then she strains the meat from the juice and returns the liquid to the pan adding bisto to thicken. She pus the meat in a square pyrex and add enough of the gravy to moisten. Tops with mash and bakes for 15 mins. She serves veg and gravy seperately from the pie.

    Yummy though!
  • While I know the difference between Cottage Pie and Shepherd's Pie can some one please tell me what Nursery Pie is? I think it is when you use ponsh maip instead of just potato mash? Am I right or am I mad? I know most of the food we eat in our house we seem to call by weird names no one else has heard of!

  • I once added a green pepper to the mince, just because it was on its last legs and I wanted to use it up. It was delish! I also add oxo cubes, a generous splash of worcestershire sauce (although an even more generous dollop of brown sauce is a good alternative), garlic and season all. I might make some tonight as this has made me hungry now!
  • I add a tin of baked beans to my mince mixture & I finely slice my potatoes instead of mashing & layer on top (mainly because I'm so lazy to mash potatoes until they are smooth!!)!!! Delicious!!

  • I have taken mince and gravy out of the freezer. I prepared this ages ago, but is the basis for shepherds pie. I normally just heat it up and serve with spuds.

But my mum gave me a load of mash potato on Sunday left over from our dinner.

To make shepherds pie from these, do I just bung everything cold into a dish and put in oven or do I have to heat up the mince on the stove first and the mash before I put it on top? If so, how do I heat up mash again?

I might have to add some more potatoes to the mash as I don't think there will be enough, but obv I will have to cook these first and put on top with the leftover mash, right?

Hi! if the mince is already cooked and prepared just bung it in a dish and top with the spuds, sdding more mash if you need to.Then reheat it in the oven.
(if PennyPincher was around she's the expert on this dish!;) :D )

Personally I would heat it up. Only because I would want to make sure there wasn't too much gravy with the mince otherwise the potato will go too soggy. (Only you can see how runny the mince is when you have defrosted it and if you can strain some of the gravy off from cold)

I would strain the some of the gravy off into a saucepan to heat pour over at the end.
Put the mince in a dish and put the mash ontop.

 Shephard pie is one of my favourites.

We're having Shepherds pie tonight - I love it with carrots and mushrooms in with the mince though!
  • Cool. Thanks guys. I think it was quite thick when I made it, so I will just put it all in a dish and cook it in the oven from cold.

Any ideas on oven temp (I have electric oven) and for how long? Hopefully not more than an hour as I don't get in till 5.30pm and I will need to make the extra mash I need. :o
