Hi there,
I've just read a similar post. I work for a organisation and earn approx £24k. I'm very lucky to earn what I do as I have no formal qualifications and would struggle to earn that much elsewhere.
...However I can't stand my job, so much so I go home and cry at night and it's effecting me personally and with my partner as I'm so down. I work hard but the rewards are always reaped by other staff members and the office is working in the dark ages in regards to it's policy and ethics as it has one person you report to, the manager and that's it, no union, no other opinion..what goes, goes.
I have been offered a job at £18,500k for a larger company with a better structure. The problem is is that it is so much lower and I have to pay £545 for my mortgage, £105 for my car loan, and £250 each month to a relative for funding my house deposit.
Has anyone any thoughts or been in a similar situation, if so what did you do.
I am trying to clear my balances so I have more flexibility but it's hard. I am willing to work evening/weekends if need be but I don't know if that would help tax wise on top of the salary of £18,500.
I know it is tough out there so I appreciate also that some people have no jobs or earn less, as I was once there. But I do need help in finding out what is best to do. xx

Is there no way you could cut down on your outgoings eg mobile, tv/BB/landline, food shopping. Are you sure you would be happy at the new job ?, i take it you would be as you said the structure is better. If it was me i would take the job at 18.5k, ok so its lower but id be more happier at work and home. Dont mean to be nosey but does your partner help with the bills or do you just pay for the stuff you mentioned eg car loan, mortgage etc0

I have tried cutting down but it is hard as I can't cut much more down! I am unhappy (don't wish to say too much) but unhappy enough that I cry at home and my OH is getting fed up of it. Only thing is I don't want to struggle paying the mortgage with my oh and no other jobs going0

Is there any chance that you could supplement your income with a second/part time job?
Personally, I would say that your health and wellbeing is more important than the money - so if you think the new company are better, then go for it.
I am in a very similar situation to you - but without another opportunity to go to (yet!)

I understand what your going through OP, my job gets me down and i want to leave but id rather not do so until i have another 1 lined up0

 This is tricky. On one hand you are miserable and should think about your health and on the other hand, that drop in salary will leave a significant dent until you can re-budget your way of living.
Anyway, ultimately you have to think about your health and your OH. Have you talked it over with your OH?0 -
How much longer do your loans run for?Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0

I have managed to clear as much as I can. £1500 is left for a car loan, and £4000 left for a family loan where they lent me money for the house deposit. I currently pay £105pm for the car loan and £250 for the family loan due to salary. Obviously cannot change the car loan but wondering if family would accept smaller amout say £150 for mortgage loan until I am sorted out?
Any suggestions?0 -
I'd ask the family, see if they can accomodate a lower payment for the time being; hopefully they will be fine with this. Find out first, and if they are you know that taking the lower paid job won't affect you too badly.
I'd leave that 24k job if I were you; you can always do a bit of weekend work to supplement the income. But if you carry on there your home life is not going to improve. I had a cr*ppy job and left in the end with no job to go to (very risky, but thankfully paid off. Wouldn't recommend it in these times though!) because home life was getting unbearable. I'd either be snapping or crying.
You can re-budget and live off the new salary; but you can't improve the working conditions where you are now and it'll just get worse. I got very close to being signed off with stress so I jumped ship. I went to visit old colleagues months later and they all commented on how well I was looking so I knew I'd made the right call. Good luck with whatever you decideDo good deeds and you could raise the curtain, do good deeds and you could really raise your life....0 -
So what does your OH think? As it directly affects him, he should be a big part of this discussion.
You could try posting your SOA on the Debt-Free board, to see if they can help you cut down your outgoings or suggest ways of topping up your income or check whether it's feasible for you to live on the lower salary.
Personally, I would go for the new job and try to get a second part-time job to top up the wages if necessary. What's the point of earning 24k if you're miserable all the time?0 -
I would take the other job. It really isn't worth taking your unhappiness at work home. Keep us updated x0
