table decs - can't afford flowers, not allowed candles - what else could I do??

title says it all.
Can't afford fresh flowers as our budget won't run. Went to the venue yesterday and they told us that candles are allowed for a sit down meal (we aren't having one) but for evening do and buffet it's a no-go. Breaks insurance rules and so forth.
So what else can I do? We are having an evening buffet only with 8 tables, and I don't want to spend over £8 a table as it's just an evening do. And the only other "no" is balloons - too many pickling little ones who would have tantrums not being able to run about with them (mine included!).
Am totally strapped for ideas now..... thought I had it planned out with goldfish bowls and floating candles!
Help!

How about a vase with a submersible coloured light in the bottom. Fill the vase with clear glass pebbles ontop of the light and then top up with water.
They'll look great in the evening when the lights are down low. For a bit more sparkle put some of those table diamonds in mixed though the pebbles.
You can probably get the lot online for less than £5 a vase.:jProud mummy to a beautiful baby girl born 22/12/11 :j0 -

I am doing these but with pink lights, cost £50 for 7 x mirror plates, 11 x submerdible lights, 7 x fish bowls and 3 packs of crystal accents. Bare grass will cost £2. Venue was gonna take £40 for top table flowers so bargain!Became Mrs Lawson on May 1st 2010

I don't thinkI'll bother with anything - I always find center pieces annoying anyway, expecially if you have side orders with your meal etc. You just end up moving stuff around.
Maybe some simple sparkly confetti sprinkled in the center?0 -
You could always grab some rose petals from Ikea (artificial) and scatter them across the tables. Less work and money involved. Also loving the ideas above too.0

What's wrong with supermarket flowers and Ikea vases?
Should work out about £5 a table!Tank fly boss walk jam nitty gritty...0 -

i agree, i think flowers can have massive impact at very low cost. my sister did stem vases (very cheap in ikea) with a gerbera which are great for impact an just a bit of greenery and some tiny white flowers. think was under £2 a table and was great.
the other option would be to have balloons, and just have a few extra for the children - attach them to their chair, then once dinner is finished they can have them to play with!getting married: 02/10/10

Could decapitate artificial flowers (something like the gerberas Ikea have in in a multitude of colours) and float them in a goldfish bowl anyway. We had small vases of artificial flowers (again Ikea's finest), with ivy wound around the centre of the table in a circle (someone's mum had been trimming her garden and brought a sack of it down). Add in the favour boxes - we had litle tuxedo and wedding dress boxes with sweets in and the tables looked brilliant.
Or you could use balloons - tie ones to the chairs of the kiddies and write their names on in some form of marker pen and curly writing and they've got a "placecard" and a balloon of their own to play with! If you use balloons after several glasses of wine half of them are going to be hijacked for playing with/doing the helium squeaky voice thing by the average male anyway!Little miracle born April 2012, 33 weeks gestation and a little toughie!0 -
