Ive been trying to teach myself how to crochet and really love it. Ive also been collecting the Art of Crochet magazine so that I can learn all the stitches.

However, I have yet to make anything. I get really confused as to what exactly is the "first stitch" in a row. Then the patterns say to miss the first stitch etc and Im never sure where Im supposed to start. I always get to the end of the row and realise there aren't enough stitches left for me to follow the pattern. Is this common?

Even some of the patterns in the Art of Crochet aren't easy for me, as a beginner, to follow. I wish they had a bit more explanation.:(
