I like to be thought of as an English gentleman; so,when the colder months arrive, there is nothing like getting up in the dark and breakfasting on a pot of ceylon tea, toast made with gluten free cornmeal bread and Gentleman's relish (Also known as Patum Peperium).
Trouble is this anchovy paste-based recipe is so expensive. Does anybody have a recipe for it, or can hint what is in it, so that I can construct a reasonable alternative.

To buy or not to buy, need not be in question

Have you tried the tubes of anvchovy paste, just butter (or what have you) your carbohydrate of choice and add the paste - I favour the dot and dab school of distribution.
I often use a squeeze of anchovy paste in lieu of a stock cube too.

I used to think gentlemans relish was a euthamism for something.
They sell it in Sainsburys, I don't know how much.0 -
Is there a list of ingredients on the pot? You could go and look at it in the store and memorise the ingredients before having a go yourself. I'm intending to do something similar with Patak's Brinjal pickle shortly - and if successful I'll post my recipe on here!Official DFW Nerd No 096 - Proud to have dealt with my debt!0

I saw Sophie Grigson making something like this on TV a while back - it was anchovies, butter and a few spices - you could try looking up her receipes on the UKTV food site www.uktvfood.co.ukJane

Sainsburys give the ingredients as anchovies (min 60%), butter, salt, rusk, herbs, spices. The ability of skinny old ladies to carry huge loads is phenomenal. An ant can carry one hundred times its own weight, but there is no known limit to the lifting power of the average tiny eighty-year-old Spanish peasant grandmother.0
