What ingredient can't you do without?

Evening All!

I'm wanting to stock up the kitchen cupboards with stuff I can use to make other stuff :D

Although I use a SC and make soup, I want to start making alot more things from scratch but I don't know what base ingredients I should have at home (porridge oats to bulk out mince? Flour to make sure there's always something to help thicken my creations? 5 different kinds of stock cubes? jars/tins of tomatoes?)

All of your replies will be most welcome!

Rice vinegar, red/white wine vinegars, balsamic vinegar, light/dark soy sauce, tabasco sauce, worcester sauce, sesame oil, olive oil, rapeseed (vegatable) oil. All the stocks in cubes (chicken, lamb, beef, fish, veg)

Garlic, onion, basil, thyme, rosemary, parsley, corriander and a few root veg and eggs & butter.

Always have meats available like Braising steak, mince, chicken breast etc

Then all the baking stuff like light/dark brown sugar, caster sugar, granulated, self raising/plain flour, baking powder, corn flour, and a few extracts like vanilla etc.

As for one ingrediant i can't do without? Well im sorry it must be 2, garlic and onion, i can do so much with those two as a base!

I have a bread maker and whilst i don't use it for all my bread i do for much of it.

Aside from the taste there are few things are comforting as waking up in the morning and smelling freshly baked bread :p

    Hi angelicmary,

I wouldn't be without black pepper, garlic, mixed herbs, chilli, sage, tarragon, cornflour, various flours, butter, sugar, tinned tomatoes, tomato puree, eggs, cheese, beans/pulses, rice, couscous, onions and stock cubes.

What we have in our storecupboards will depend on individual tastes and cooking habits but if you have a look at this thread it will give you a general idea of what most people use:

    Storecupboard Essentials

I'll add your thread to that one later to keep the ideas together.

in the days of unemployment i get drawn towards cheese alot, probably a sign of depression or something but still!
  • I wouldn't be without flour - plain SR and strong, eggs, butter, herbs, stock cubes, olive oil, tinned pulses dried are cheaper but no good in a just got home and there's nowt for dinner emergency, lentils, oats, sugar, treacle, tinned toms, potatoes and onions, bacon or packs of cubed pancetta, double cream, cheese, baked beans, dried pasta.

There are several meals I could make just from that lot alone and many more I could make by adding other ingredients. The lentils are for bulking out any mince dishes.
