Hi,

Just got bit drunk so please scuse spelling mistakes. Just found out today that myself n hubby are 2 b made redundant (we both work at same place!) i will get some £ as been there 8 years but he wont as not that 2 years. Not supposed to say who it is but !!!!!!!! to 'em will be in press tmo anyway BARCLAYS SALES FINANCING is "centrallising functions" to Basingstoke. Great, except we live in Hastings. We also have c£13k debt on DMP £3k on car, 1 child aged 2 and one of the highest unemployed rates in country, so not likely to be able to get job paying any where near what we get now. Anyone got any ideas what the hell we do now?!?

Oh no - that's awful news :grouphug:
May seem a bit drastic, but have you thought about relocating
Wouldn't be too bad as your child isn't in school yet and could be nice break :o

Sorry to hear about your news - it must be really hard for you - but your spelling is excellent considering the fact that you are a lil tipsy!!

On a practical note how much will you get from redundancy? Maybe you will be able to offer full and final settlements? Maybe there is light at the end of the tunnel?

Sounds like a redundancy payment and a relocation could be the light at the end of a tunnel for you both. Have you thought about moving some place else? Could be worth looking for areas where there are jobs that both you and hubbie can do, or look for something different in a new area.

Redundancy is not the end of the world, only the start of a new exciting adventure. Grab it and use it to your advantage.

  • supposed to be having meeting to "discuss options" at end of week so will find out how much cash will be coming my way. have thought of relocating but have never even visited basingstoke so have no idea if it's some where i wanna live, have been told is v expensive compared to where we are now, ie current mortgage is £360 pm for interest only, 1 bed flat rental in b'stoke=£675. Think mite just sell up n use money for plastic surgery & runaway to bahamas ha ha ha!!!!!

Oh jeez, sorry to hear your bad news and a tipple is well deserved in these circumstances (pretty good spelling too :D)

My best advice is get organised now. Get both your CVs bang up to date, get a base letter typed up and send it to all the companies that might be interested in your skill sets/experience within the distance you're prepared to travel, asking if they have any vacancies that maybe suitable and when your available date will be. Do it now and get in there before others in the same boat as you do it.

Start getting registered with agencies - your company should give you time off to attend interviews and the like due to the redundancies. With someone big like Barclays, HR usually co-ordinate companies/agencies coming in to talk to and to help you get other employment. Worth finding out if they are going to do this and when.

I don't know much about DMPs (hopefully someone will be along to advise), but I should imagine you'd be best letting them know the situation as soon as you have details yourself.

Could you or your OH use your skills in a different type of role? The broader you can go, the more likelihood of finding something, though as you say lower salaries will come into it.

Good luck and keep us updated.

Sorry to hear about your news.
I live near Basingstoke and it si not a bad area to live in. Liek anyother place Basingstoke has some very nice and expensive areas and some not very nice but if you look to live in areas just outside of Basingstoke, there are some lovely places and a lot cheaper than B'stoke itself.

Are you able to negotiate a relocation package with the company and actually keep the jobs by moving nearer to work? Just a thought.

If all fails, Bahamas sounds good :-)

    Good luck.
