Mum's dental problem - advice please

Advice needed please!

My Mum had a post crown fitted a couple of months ago on her fron tooth (second from the middle). She is abroad at the moment and the crown part came out leaving the post in the tooth. She used a temp dental glue which held in fine until she saw a dentist yesterday. Dentist told her the tooth was broken but she recemented the crown and told her she wouldn't need to see her own dentist unless problems ( Mum asked if she should go back).

So we just wondered:

What does she mean by broken? And if tooth is broken will it just come out again?

Also if the tooth is broken who is liable for any remedial treatment? Dentist cos it was just done? Or Mum cos she broke tooth?

She is not in any pain so is planning just to wait until she is back in UK anyway but is a bit concerned re costs/losing the tooth etc

Thanks in advance!

  • post crowns are the weakest sort of crown, but as the alternative would be extraction it is a compromise most are willing to take.
Who is responsible for the cost seeing as it was a recent treatment?
Impossible to say, as I don't know what the tooth was like *before* treatment.

Is the dentist guilty of herodontics?
ie the heroic attempt to treat teeth best extracted?
It is a condition we all often suffer because we know that most people don't want to lose their teeth and will try whatever we can to save something.

On the other hand did the dentist suggest extraction and was persuaded otherwise by your mum?
It's a impossible discussion for an online forum as every situation is different and only your mum and her dentist will be able to speak sensibly about it.
  • Ok thanks for your advice. She will go back as soon as she is home. Think it was done to change the position of her tooth which stuck out of the bite and was discoloured with a a big filling if that helps any. But I get your points!
