2 daughters at University.

I know that technically they have all the expenses - student loans etc.

But they do depend on help with rent, food, extra books etc

From your experience - what will the OR allow on an I&E?

Normally, nothing for children at university, only children in further education not higher education are classed as dependants and can be included

Yea - unfortunately thats what I thought.

I guess any of their costs must be paid from any surplus.

    Errr,

Big favour to ask - would someone tell them - that there is unlikely to be any surplus.

Might save that little nugget till after Christmas...
  • There is no allowances and they should have enough money to be able to support themselves anyway. Grants/loans/bursaries etc are sufficient to provide a reasonable standard of living however it does mean no Sky TV or being in the pub every night.

    Hi,
We went Br in November, and I have 2 boys at Uni. No allowances made for them at all, and I just stopped helping them out- was struggling to do it anyway. I explained the situation to them, and they have applied for a bursary due to our financial state now, and hopefully they'll get it.
If not, then they'll have to manage! Pre- Br all i could manage was a couple of food vouchers per month, and now I have had to tell them to use the train when they come home as i can't afford the cost of the petrol for the long drives now.
It's hard, as we all want to help them at Uni- but they decided to go, and it'll benefit them :)

I now save things like my Tesco points and send them vouchers for meals out eetc with those, and book trains weeks in advance to get cheaper travel. I've also directed them to this site!

  • I would offer the same advice to all students. Get all all the accounts you can from as many banks as you can and do it when you start. Your financial status will likely never be better than when you start university (at least until you graduate) and you can use the overdrafts at all of them. Some management is necessary to shift money between the accounts but you end up using them just as you would a plethora of credit cards, using them regularly etc.

    Errr..NO!!!
Why encourage spending, and extra debt at such a young age? yes, they'll have good credit- but look where that's ended most of us here!!!
I would not advise this at all- the grant/loans they get are adequate, and they should learn to top it up with a weekend/evening job rather than shifting money between banks. You aren't allowed lots of student accounts, and why run up more debt to have to pay off later?

Sorry, but I think this is an irresponsible idea.
My middle son goes to uni 200 miles awy- he gets the maintenace loan and tops up with weekend work, and yes, he's skint- but he can affords food, rtent, nights out and he tops up with extra work when he returns at the Summer holidatys and saves it all.

I think learning to live within one's means is better advice.
