Can't add much more really but just wanted to welcome you to the board and well done for posting! Things can seem so overwhelming when starting, but it gets better.

To help with the debts part - have you got anything to sell on Ebay or Amzon. I sell a little here and there and it helps paying off little amounts off the debts. This month I had a few shocking bills and thought I would have to debt big time but due to an extra £30 from Amazon, even after the fees and p&p it helps so much (has mean tI can buy the shopping, nappies and milk without using credit card!!).

Maybe to help pay for those things you really want to keep it would be worth having a trawl through your stuff?

Ebay is great. Amazon is easy, although fees are high, but no fees if you don't sell and it's much easier than Ebay - just type in what you want to sell and it comes up. You don't have to take photos etc. Also things like books and CDs that may not sell on Ebay do sell on Amazon...just realised I need to get listing on Ebay again though!

Hi elantan and welcome! :hello: You are already well on your way. Just thinking along the lines of clearing out stuff, could you get the family to help you do a boot sale? You might be surprised what you can sell at one of these. I do think it's important that the family realise it's their problem too, and the sooner you can get together and get it sorted, the sooner life improves for everyone. I understand what you say about son needing to study for GCSEs so maybe he's not in a position to get work yet, but could you have a chat with your nephew and lay your cards on the table and ask him for a small contribution towards board? If he is working he shouldn't object to helping out. He probably has no idea how worried you are about the future.
Re smilies, click on one of the icons and it will magically appear in your post when you submit it ;)

my council tax in norwich is 90 quid per month, which I think is relatively cheap. however, even allowing for £130 council tax that means your water is £70 a month? Is there any way of discussing this with the council to double check that it's right?.

The council tax could well be right. Scottish council tax bills can be a bit daft. I pay £116 per month for small 3 bed semi and that is with 25% reduction as the only adult. Three bed detached in same road is £180 for two adults.
