Dont forget to check out the reduced sections in Asda. I buy the reduced sliced meats when I see them and freeze them for Lunch sandwiches and pizza toppings. If you see something in the reduced section you always buy but its not priced up,take it to customer services and ask them to price it.
Have a look at the threads on making your own cleaning solutions as the price of cleaning gear really adds up.0 -
i've saved so much money and wasted food since making weekly meal planners.
i would impulse buy and then reaslise that i had bought too much for a week's worth of meals, and some would end up going off before it could be eating and we were wasting too much.
i hardly throw anything away these days, except for the odd item that expired more quickly than i was expecting.
this site is a godsend0 -
Good luck weegie, you sound so positive and determined, I hope your successful. I've been OS since april, had a few setbacks, but I'm getting there.

Thanks to all. You're right in that I shouldn't do it all at once...baby steps. My first step is getting my shopping/cooking in order. I'll be making a meal planner this weekend and starting to note down as well just how much I am spending. I'll probably be amazed (and that's even with my husband working at ASDA and getting a staff discount!). Funnily enough I was there on Tuesday and bought a fair bit of bread reduced and stuck it in the freezer. I aim to do this more often - head there later at night when the kiddies are in bed and see what's in the reduced section.
I know I should have probably known this - didn't realise you could freeze the cold meat that it usually in the reduced section!0 -
Weegie, I use reduced meat as the basis for a lot of my meal plans. My local Co-op (overpriced) often has stuff half price or less, local Sainsburys has things reduced to 10p or 20p just before closing time, etc. I pop in whenever I am passing at a suitable time of day and just see what I can pick up for the freezer. Then I look up recipes using those items. My "regular weekly shop" therefore consists mainly of staples (pasta, rice, eggs etc) and veggies, and I eat fab food for next to nothing. Oh for the day when I have more than a half-share of a fridge-freezer to put it all in!

OMG! what weegie just said!!
I also have had enough!
Theres me and 3 kids, (aged 8, 5 and 4)
Im going to do the meal/shopping planning, AND STICK TO IT lol, would love to cook from scratch but only know how to do a couple of things, so will be looking on the recipe boards too.
Can i pick your brains?
Probably a stupid thing to ask but does it work out cheaper to cook from scratch? Im guilty of throwing a jar of cooking sauce in...
We have an outdoor market on certain days, is it cheaper to get fruit an veg here or from the supermarket?
I shall stop internet shopping, im missing out on reduced items, another silly question coming.... If i buy something on its last day is it still safe to freeze? i mean will it go off while defrosting?? (told u it was silly)
Anyway ill stop there for now, just reading this back makes me realise how hopeless i am!

No you're not!! You're starting at the beginning where everyone starts!:D
There are great people on here who will help every step of the way, but they all had to learn, nobody is born knowing it.
Food that is within its use-by date can be frozen, but when defrosted must be cooked immediately. Sometimes better to cook and then freeze if you can.
Good luck! You never get a second chance to make a first impression.0 -
It will definitely be cheaper to get your fruit and veg from the market as opposed to Tesco and probably better quality too!
Good luck, everyone has to start somewhere.
No need to necessarily stop your internet shopping altogether. I do one bulk shop at the start of the month to get all bulky and heavy items delivered and also to use any extra points codes I find.Organised people are just too lazy to look for things

Its massively cheaper to cook from scratch!
Yes you can freeze items on their last day. They are safe to eat when you freeze them and wont go off while defrosting (just defrost them in the fridge if you're worried). Then treat them as though it is the last day.0
