And Moozie, I am 31 and I felt strange too! But I will be back!

I'm 34 and got my turkey from them at christmas but did not visit again for 3 months, used the butcher properly for the 1st time at the end of March. We now go once a month a fill the freezer with meat from them. Always good offers (trays of meat -chicken, minted lamb chops, pork chops £10 each or 3 for £25 - always get enough for at least 4-5 meals from each tray), the beef mince is beautiful, and all of it always tastes much nicer than the supermarket. (but garlic sausages are rather strong so avoiding them!! :rotfl: )

We had a bbq on Sat, went to him too instead of getting that processed muck from the supermarket. got 20 ribs, 20 burgers, 20 chicken pieces, & 20 sausages for £20. It fed 10 of us easily and we had some left over to nibble cold on the beach the next day!

Oh my goodness, I NEED to find my local butcher, I always used to use a butcher in previous places, but I can't find one here....madness I tell you madness. I've even asked around and no one seems to use one

Thanks everyone, feel more re-assured now :o

It's a bit strange going to a butcher for the first time - even though I am 30 - my mom would be so embarrassed if she knew! (about the butcher not that I am 30 :p)/quote]

The first time I went into the butchers a couple of weeks ago was the first time in my life. I nervously & very loudly told him that I was a virgin:o.........well, it broke the ice (not sure if the free sausages had anything to do with it!). Subsquently he was very good advising me on oprtion sizes & cuts etc.

after watching a programme on C4 about supermarket food (esp meat), i am extremely reluctant to use the big supermarkets for roasts, chicken, fruit & veg etc, but luckily we have an excellent market on Fridays for fruit & veg, fresh fish & several butchers counters, which work out SO much cheaper eg 3 big sirloin steaks for a fiver or huge chicken fillets & lamb shanks for a quid each!! we had already been thinking about using the local shops & market more but this was exactly the shove i needed away from just running to Tescos every lunchtime! was a bit odd at first trying to work out amounts of mince etc but i've found that if you ask loads of questions you can't go far wrong!!:D

Thanks for that. You've hit the nail on the head for me there.I am so used to cooking what comes in a packet - and that is mostly chicken/pork/turkey in our household - that anything else is too much for my little brain.

You are right though,I will be asking the friendly butcher lots of questions and as the lamb was delicious tonight, I am hoping to become one of his regulars :D Hope he's ready for me lol

Going back to an early post in this thread about portion size, I found a really good plate in the kitchen at my local toddler group last week. It had a picture on it of how your food should be split between the food groups - approx. 1/4 protein group, 3/8 carbohydrate group and 3/8 veges. Each section had little pictures of the foods from within that group. I showed it to a few people and they all thought it was excellent. Don't know where it came from though.

A long time ago when I worked in a butchers, we used to do freezer orders. We used to have a lady who was very particular about wanting to know exactly how much everything was, we had to price everything seperately for her and write it all down so she could check our calculations.
One day she ordered a lamb for the freezer, so it was cut to requirements, labelled and priced. The lady came and took it away. A couple of days later she was back complaining that she'd been overcharged. She went on to explain that she'd used her bathroom scales to check the weights of the various cuts of meat and that our scales were a few pounds out.
We had to be very tactful in telling her that our scales were checked regularly by weights and measures and that bathroom scales couldn't be relied on to give an accurate weight measurement for people - let alone sheep!!!!
Slightly OT but it still makes me laugh.
