Have now spoken to my dentist and I have posts on upper right 2 and 3, so can't drain via them, both have had root canal treatment.
He suspects it may have been caused via a gum infection (rather than a tooth) as my partial denture starts upper right 4. (The gum did feel a bit soft the week before but I thought it could wait till my next check up in december.wrong guess!!)
He said he wants it as small as poss before he lances it as there is no head on it. If it does come to a head before friday to call him and he will get me in.
    Does this sound right?

    Yes - it sounds reasonable.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

I had a similar thing to this - my dentist drilled up through the back of my tooth to drain it and put a temporary dressing in, wihtout anaesthetic as it was a dead tooth - it didnt hurt either just felt odd.
It came back a few days later and he removed temp dressing and drained it again. After a couple of weeks he filled it properley and the abcess did come back but popped a few days later in my gumline.
That was 6 months ago and no more problems since then (touch wood).
Hope all goes well for you and you get this sorted asap.

Try and get it sorted before you go away . I had one a few years whilst on holiday in Spain. Needless to say holiday was ruined with the pain and discomfort. Had to have it taken out on return home after it was lanced. UGH.!!!!

I hate to tell you that if the infection returned after the tooth was filled, then the tooth is still infected. You should mention this to your dentist as the root filling will need redoing if this is the case.
