Thanks every one for the very handy replies.

I have to admit, no I couldn't be a childminder - for 1 we live in a 2 bed terrace house which is tiny and I used to work with kids for a while and I really didn't like it.

Thanks again, and I'll keep my fingers crossed, hopefully they'll have something available.

My other options were Sainsbury's or Focus, as they are the two other large stores near by. But near by is still 10 miles away, so Tesco's is my best option for local work.

I'd say that the more hours you put on your form, the more likely you are to be considered. When I worked in retail, we didn't consider applicants who put school hours unless they were also available at least one evening and one day at the weekend, as their contracted hours. Overtime is usually available on top of this, sometimes at short notice.

Also if you are able to get the job, what about school holiday? I think Tesco offer four weeks holiday a year for new employees, so there are a few weeks where you would need child-care.
A minute at the till, a lifetime on the bill.

Nothing tastes as good as being slim feels.

I worked for Tesco for 10 years but when I returned after maternity leave and asked for school hours I was turned down, so I ended up having to work 4am til 9am, after 2years of this I took a career break as I was total exhausted all the time. I found in the store where I worked that everyone wanted to do school hours when it is generally quiet, No one wants to work evenings and weekends when its busy and they need extra staff in so I wouldn't bank on getting school hours, you usually start off with the c**p shifts.
