Mystery Pan - What's it for?

I've just been tidying out some cupboards, and in the back of one I've found a piece of cookware that used to belong to my late mother. I'd guess it's around 15-20 years old, unused, and still has the original label on, along with a price tag which says £5.60.
Now the label says:
LONGLIFE
Cookware
BLACK IRON
IMPORTANT
This item is protected by a clear lacquer which must be removed before use. Wash in hot water using normal washing up liquid, dry and season immediately.
It looks like a frying pan (about 12 inches in diameter) made of heavy metal but, and this is the bit that has me confused, it has 21 round holes (of about 0.5 inch diameter) drilled in the base.
Now I'm probably being really dim here, but can anybody enlighten me as to what you're supposed to use it for?
Thanks

Just so you know, it's got me and my wife stumped, too! But maybe we're dim, too!"Some say the cup is half empty, while others say it is half full. However, this is skirting around the issue. The real problem is that the cup is too big."0

Thanks! It does look a bit like that, but I suspect the holes in mine are a bit bigger. I don't think I'm ever likely to want to roast chestnuts, so I guess it's destined for the dustbin!Stompa0 -
