Hello I'm new and chestnut question

Hi
I have just started to embrace a 'waste not, want not' approach to life and have really enjoyed reading the forum posts over the last couple of weeks and have found a lot of inspiration here.
I hope that I can start to contribute a little to help others when I can x

A quick question: I've gathered some chestnuts from the garden but not really sure what to do with them, I know they can be 'roasted' but don't have an open fire ... any ideas or suggestion would be most appreciated!
I've also gathered some walnuts and can collect hazelnuts too!
Thanks
Norman Bean x

If those are horse chestnuts they are the wrong ones for roasting, you need the sweet chestnut from Spain.
Woofles you need to get out of that house. You are going insane:eek: - colinw

apologises for spelling mistakes - google toolbar and I have had a hissy fit and I've lost me spell checker.

Sweet chestnuts are also found growing in the UK.

  • These aren't horse chestnuts (conkers) so I guess they're sweet chestnuts. I'm in France but I've seen chestnuts growing in UK too x

    Hi Norman,welcome to the forum!

No need for an open fire - score the shells (just one cut is fine) and roast them in the oven.
Peel and eat as they are or use in cooking
Delicious chopped and stirred into panfried brussel sprouts or other cabbage.
Can also be scoreed and then boiled for 10 minutes - makes them much easier to peel but use rubber gloves or similar as they are very hot.
If they cool before you peel them all then reheat for a couple of minutes
