What is an alternative Local number for JobSeekers direct ?

Shame on the DWP and the Government for charging people like me who've been laid off work 40 pence/minute to dial the Jobseekers Premium Rate hotline 0845xxxxxx !!!

I've tried searching on SayNoTo870.com for an alternative local number, but the number
0151 353 4760 seems to be disconnected ?

Anyone else here had more luck than me ?

Ta!

Look in your local phone book and try and find a number for the local jobcentre. When you sign on ask the advisor to give you a number that you can call that is a direct line as opposed to 0845

You should try to call from a landline if at all possible.
I tend to avoid ringing the number altogether if I can help it. It would be much easier if they put all the details on the website to start with!

The CAB recently published a report on this issue if anyone is interested.

Not sure that 0845 can be a premium rate line, I understood that was a local rate. Willing to be corrected though.

I think OP is referring to the cost of calling from a mobile.

So it's not the DWP or the government- Just the OP's provider. So shame on them seems more appropriate.

  • If you ask them to phone you back, they should but then you have the problem of waiting to get through to someone which will cost.

Have you tried searching on the saynoto 0870 website for local numbers for any of the other premium jobcentre numbers? The touch tone on my phone doesn't always work so I always have to speak to somebody who can't really help me and ask them to put me through to relevant person so you might be able to do it that way.

If it's not an emergency, ask when you sign on for the local number (some are very reluctant to give it) or use the job centre phones if you can get to one.

It's such a pain it costs so much to ring, especially when you're kept on hold in a queue for so long!
  • As far as i know ( and i used to work for Jobseekers Direct - still work for jobcentreplus) there is no other number for jobseeker direct. the 0845 number is the price of a local call , not premium rate, so if you dont have a landline to ring from go to the nearest payphone. if you dont like what your mobile provider charges dont use your mobile. you can ring free of charge from the phones in the jobcentre.
