i bought a jar of these today as i love them but they are really expensive for what you get..
does anyone know if you could make peppadew-a-likes with normal peppers? it may be they are a different breed and that is what gives it the flavour, but it may be the process they use? the brine they are in tastes quite sweet and not too vinegary...

Is it possible to get fresh ones? If so, just plant the seeds0

They are a particular breed of peppers, I expect you could source some seeds for something similar and grow your own. The name as Peppadew is a trademarked name and highly protected it would seem, and they go to great lengths to stop every tom, !!!!!! and harry growing them. I read somewhere that the farmers that grow them are forbidden from distributing seed or fruits with viable seed, so you only ever see them prepared and pickled.

However, I would be inclined to have an experiment with some ordinary red peppers sliced or chopped and try pickling them in a sweet and spicy vinegar. There's heaps of recipes on t'internet for Pickled Peppers; you might have to play around with quantities of sugar and spice to achieve the right balance.Mortgage

just dredging up this old post to say that i managed to make my own peppadew-a-likes after all!! i managed to get some sweetfire peppers reduced om morrisons the other day.. down from £1.89 a bag to 45p.. bought 4 bags and used this recipe for the pickling process and they look, smell and taste (one fell on the counter during packing.. shame to waste it!) almost exactly the same..
would have been astonishingly expensive if the peppers had been full price though as 4 bags only made 3 jars (normal jam jar size)
however i saved the seeds and hope to grow some next year and make lots and lots!!0 -
That looks great Charliee, will give that a go next time I spy some reduced peppers!0

Didn't Peter Piper pick a peck of them?0

Oh my goodness - I love Peppadews. Have you seen the price of the ones stuffed with cream cheese? They are divine. Well done for making your own.0
