New here - can't talk to anyone else

Hello everyone,

i actually joined this site a while ago before i bought my house. I am single and now live on my own. Over the last year (well just this year really) i have mounted up debts (credit card and overdraft) of around £3000. It seems like so much money and i have no idea how i've come to spend that amount, i had a fairly expensive holiday this year and this of course has added to it.

Now i'm working really hard to spend little and put every spare penny towards my debt. I'm a (now recovering) self confessed shopaholic but over the last month ive hardly bought any clothes so i'm quite proud of myself :D

Hoping that joining here and having people to chat to will help keep me on the straight and narrow as i wouldn't talk to anyone else about it.

Thanks if you got this far!

Well done for taking the first step! In 2004 I was in 10k debt and not dealing with it, as off late 2007 I started dealing with it and have halved the debt. In March next year, I will have paid one loan off and just have my car finance left, you can do it but you just need to work hard :j
No you're not a vegetarian if you eat any animal or fish, so do not insult genuine veggies by calling yourself one!

Thanks to everyone who posts competitions. You are the stars of the board :T:j:T
  • Hi Sugar and welcome to MSE. This site is full of supportive people, good info and excellent advice. I think it's great you're educating yourself now before your debts get any bigger. Good for you!

Isn't it funny how we can't tell our friends and family about money problems? I'm constantly pretending to mine that I'm well off... LOL!

Best of luck with your journey and see you around.

  • Welcome to the site! It's been a huge morale boost to me to have the people on here giving you advice and helping you out - they'll get you through everything! Acknowledging the issue is the best thing, the 'lightbulb moment' as it were, and once you've done that you can start to plan! I had £7k of debt in 2006, but have pulled my finger out and halfed that since then, and will hopefully clear most of it, if not all, by March 2010!

Keep checking back daily and the support and advice will spur you on!

Hey sweet stuff (sorry, couldn't resist :p)

It might be worth doing a statement of affairs so you can see where your money is going and if there are any areas you can make savings on.

When I came to this site I had had my LBM but just didn't know what to do,what options I had.I felt totally ashamed & like I was the biggest fool in the world for getting into this financial state. After lurking on here for a while I could see that lots of people were in the same position or worse.
Some of us through being silly with cash/credit some due to to bad luck but at the end of the day I don't feel judged on this site & I'm turning things around now!You can do the same!:j

    Hello and welcome :D

Feel free to come and join the madness on the 'single and in debt' thread
Sometimes it's hard to walk in a single woman's shoes - that's why we need really special ones!

  • I've had more than one LBM, so welcome, welcome, welcome and well done for coming on here.

I know it seems daunting, sometimes we look at our debt and it looks like such a massive mountain to climb. But have a read around these threads, you will see how resiliant people are and how creative we can get when it comes to dealing with our debt.

You'll do fab on your journey :T

  • greetings sweeting (sorry for the bad play on words!) not much to add to what others have said, I too am single and got into a mess as a single parent, ill health and a string of redundancies. Love this site as it makes me realise that others are in the same boat or worse off and we are trying to sort things out. I don't really talk to people about my money problems, feel a bit ashamed, yet I'd never judge a mate who was in my situation, strange how hard we can be on ourselves. Good luck
