Advice re Delia's xmas pud

Hi there all,

I'm just making my christmas cake and was reading delia's christmas pudding recipe while I'm at it. She says that the pudding can be kept somewhere cool such as under the bed but she doesn't say how long it will keep for. I am wondering if it could be made in a couple of weeks time and kept until christmas or whether it would go off.

Any experiences or thoughts about this?

All advice gratefully received :D

  • i usually make it oct for xmas so starting it now will be fine. i keep mines in one of the hall cupboards.

my mum (a former home economics teacher from the 60s) said they would even keep till next year!

i am sure others will be along to advise as well
  • You beat me to it Debrmuncher! I read Delia also makes hers in October, and says its better for a few months save than keeping it for a year. I have kept them for a year+ & it really hasn't made much difference. I'm thinking of doing mine soon too. Christamas cake - I thought I'd do the creole one this year.
  • my mum used to make 3 - and the final one was used for my dads next birthday - July 7th the next year.

It was always rather nice to have Christmas pud in July!

  • Christmas pudding can actually be frozen
I remember my Mum making ours in August for Christmas- the alcohol preserves it. I keep mine in greaseproof in an airtight tin in the good old fashioned larder.
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

I ALWAYS buy my Xmas pud this year ready for NEXT year and they are fantastic to eat. I love Delia's Christmas cook book, it is my bible at Xmas time.

I usually make 6 puds at a time, which is 3 years worth (one xmas day, one Boxing day) and use Delia's recipe.

They 'live' in my parents larder and every so often my dad 'feeds' them with brandy .

Year 3 is always a VERY good year for xmas puddings :T:T:T:T

I used to make x4 puds at a time...I remember running out of the traditional types of booze while mixing them one year and slinging in all sorts of dregs of Cointreau and Drambuie. Then I would forget about at least two of them and discover them in the larder months if not years later. They were always just fine. No doubt because of all the neat spirits in them.

  • I actually made my Xmas Puds yesterday from Delia's Xmas Cookbook, have been making my Xmas Cake, Puds and Mincemeat every year in September for years now and they have always kept really well. I think the longer you keep them the more the flavours mature. I keep them in a kitchen cupboard and have never had a problem with anything going off.:D

I make Delia's Christmas pud but with cider instead of stout/beer. It makes a lovely pud moist but not too dark and even people in the family who don't normally eat pud say mine is 'OK' (high praise!!) Or it could be all the brandy butter. DH makes that and I have to watch him or he puts in so much brandly it curdles!!
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!

I make Delia's pudding every year in October and keep it in the spare bedroom -it's fairly cool in there..

I do cook the pudding in my slow cooker though. It saves having to keep checking on the boiling water and also ensures that I use a pudding basin that fits in my slow cooker as I also like to reheat it in there on Christmas day -that gives me another hot plate to use for veg etc.
