Now curry sauce is expensive what's the alternative?

I used to get the Tesco/Asda curry sauces at 2p, 4p and 6p (whatever it was priced at that week ;) )and have it on chips as an inexpensive snack. It was also very nice with leftover veg. Tasted just like the chippy!

I went in a few weeks ago and it was 48p!? How come the massive price hike, and is there anywhere I can get cheap, reasonable curry sauce (or make my own from some sort of powder or something?)

  • I have noticed this with a lot of Asda stuff and now tend to go to Sainsbury - believe it or not they have more choice and have a lot of basic lines cheaper than Asda.
Sainsbury still have theirs at 4p
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

  • I was in Asda this morning and the curry sauce was 4p per jar. Havn't tried it yet but bought 6 jars as it was so cheap.

My son said it tastes like the curry sauce you get from the chippy.

The Asda cheap curry sauce does taste like chippy curry sauce. I wouldn't use it for a proper curry but it is nice with chips.

I think the 48p is the 'proper price' and the 4p is a 'special offer'. I stocked up on them last time they were this low. Also stocked up on their SmartPrice Chilli Sauce (now gone back up to 32p) when it was down to 9p. The Chilli one is fairly mild so I have to add extra chilli/paprika/cayenne depending on what I have in the cupboard plus some Red Kidney Beans.

Is the Tesco one like chip shop sauce too, I like the flavour of the Asda one?

I've just checked the ingredients fully expecting it to be full of junk, but actually most of the ingredients are real food and real spices:) It's still 4p btw on the website.

Water , Tomato Pur!e , Onion (5.0%) , Sugar , Sultanas (3.0%) [contains Preservative (Sulphur Dioxide)] , Modified Maize Starch , Creamed Coconut (2.0%) , Vegetable Oil , Curry Powder (1.5%) [Coriander, Turmeric, Rice Flour, Fenugreek, Cumin, Mustard, Salt, Ginger, Black Pepper, Paprika, Chilli , Nutmeg, Fennel] , Salt , Onion Powder , Acidity Regulator (Lactic Acid) , Garlic Powder , Cayenne , Turmeric .

To make it I would chop an onion finely and fry gently in oil until soft, then add the curry powder -about 1 tbsp depending on its strength. Then add a crushed clove of garlic. Next add a dollop of tomato puree and a sachet of creamed coconut, some water-enough to get the required consistency of the sauce. Add sultanas or a spoonful of mango chutney for sweetness. Cook gently for a few mins, season to taste with salt and maybe a squeeze of lemon juice.

You could make a lot at once and freeze it for future curry sauce cravings.

I've found the value products often have far less !!!! in them than the better brands. I never buy jars/packets of sauces except sweet and sour. For some reason I have never got round to making this from scratch. The Asda Smartprice variety has far less added nasties than the expensive brands so I would rather eat that one.
