OH's child support payments

Debt-free and Proud!
Hi everyone,

My OH & his ex are divorcing on the 2 year separation thing, and until that time she is still living in the marital home & he is paying the mortgage & utility bills rather than directly giving her child support (he moved in with me, and we're moving soon where he'll be contributing to the rent)

As they'll be able to divorce early next year, and the house needs some work, they're talking about her & their son moving out whilst this work is done until the house is sold. However, my concern is that as he'll still be paying the mortgage & bills, plus for any materials or labour needed, it's going to get stretched thin as she'll then be expecting 15% of his salary in child support to replace what he's currently been paying.

My OH has a tendency to ostrich over things like this and I was wondering if anyone else had any similar experiences (hopefully with solutions!) that I could make him read through!

Thankfully, it's as amicable a split as possible between them, but from seeing friends go through divorces before I know it's when the money becomes a huge factor that things start getting messy, and I really don't want his son getting caught up in the middle of it all!

Thanks!

  • I would strongly advise that if it is amicable rather than coming at it from the angle of "this is what I need to pay" get your oh to work out realistically what he canafforde whilst still having a life himself and then get him to talk to his ex and she can put to him what she has worked out she needs and maybe they can find a middle ground that suits everyone.

Trust me if you have a pwc that is amicable (yes i know this works both ways so an nrp who is also amicable;)) that is half the battle and will make your life alot easier when working out the money.:D
