Don't Jump?

Anyone got any ideas what I can use a parachute for seeing as I don't do heights and have no intention of ever travelling in a plane? It's been stuck in a carrier bag in the cupboard for about 7 years now and I want to use it for something rather than just throw it away. I think it was one of XDH's car boot purchases just before we split up.

  • Didn't old parachutes have tonnes of uses during the war  (apart from the obvious). I remember hearing about people making underwear and dresses from them.... Of course there probably not made of anything silky anymore - could be unpleasant as underwear! oooohhh - maybe curtains! Or tablecloth (and napkins), or shower curtain... is it waterproof?! What colour is it? Sorry I've got carried away.... now I wish I had a paracute.... :o

I don't think it's real silk although it is a very silky feeling fabric, there is tons of it and I would love to use it for something. I think my original plan was a canopy for my bed but that's not exactly practical at the moment and DD has a four poster. Using it as a playtent for the summer sounds like a very good idea, I might find something to use for a frame and give them a few hours amusement :D

Make some large holes in it and give it to someone you don't like together with a parachute jump gift card :j
  • My hubbie used to parachute for a living and when we cleaned the garage out this weekend we found a top (one you put over your head, it has a hood and a small zip on the front) which was made from a parachute. It's quite nice and could be used for running ... it's maybe even waterproof.

My husband bought a bag of ripstock nylon which was offcuts from a hot ballon company.

He was suppose to make kites with it.

I suppose you could do that. Or sell it on ebay.

In my days as a nursery nurse we used to play with these with the kids.

Cat and mouse was a favourite with them.

All the kids stand in a circle with their hands around the edges of the parachute - ecxept the mouse who stands underneath and the cat who moves away from the circle with his/her back turned. The kids shake the parachute up and down then let it settle to the ground (the mouse still underneath) and keep hold of the edge of the parachute.
The cat is then bought in and has to chase and catch the mouse whilst the children around the edge keep adding air underneath by slightly lifting and dropping the parachute - great fun!

    Good for kids parties!
It's nice to be nutty but's more important to be nice
