Hi

Hope this has not been posted before

Spotted this article in the Observer today and after a bit of research with my Mum (71), found she was not getting the right tax allowance. You may want to check it out, this will save her £500 per year!

Have a look it might apply to someone you know

That's right, and how do HMRC know everyone's ages unless they are told?

Last tax-year (2005/2006) was the first year in my entire life that I've paid NO tax at all (well, all right, I probably didn't pay any in my first couple of years at work, and I certainly didn't pay any in the 3 years at uni 1978-81 even though I worked for 14 weeks in the summers).

I'm in my 71st year. And we are lucky - my DH just falls into the age-group which can still claim married people's tax allowance, and we split it between us.

It all goes to show, older person or younger person is irrelevant. You just have to be on the ball, be well-informed and keep in touch with what's happening in the world. Reading Neasa's column in the 'Observer', coming on to these boards, there is information out there and it's your own responsibility to look for it.

Conversely, for a long time after pension credit came in people were constantly advising us to apply. 'I'm sure you'll get something'. Well, no. We'd already tried in and we knew we weren't eligible. If we were, we'd apply like a shot.
