Open account with building society that doesn't charge for cheques. Ask them to raise cheques for you (make sure you have funds in account to cover cheque).

(Some societies charge for this so make sure you check!)

another idea is the nat west step account where you can have a solo debit card
there is no credit checks as there is no overdraft facility avalible to all and offers all the norm benifits of a current account
