What's happened to my bread??

I bought a Panasonic breadmaker today and have just baked my first loaf. It smells heavenly by the way!! However, it has a crust on it which is fine, but underneath is a load of air until it reaches the bread. Why has this happened? Thanks for any help!

The usual cause of this problem, I find, is insufficient kneading.

I've not used any of these machines, preferring to do it the old fashioned way and work out some stress by giving the dough a darn good pummelling.

I also like to make my bread as round buns or larger "oven-bottom cakes", as my gran called them, which bread machines might not be suited to.
