if anything like me, its by eye work. i very rarely weigh things like potatoes, rice, pasta, fish or meat - my butcher always laughs when i ask for a joint of something, and give a 'so big' hand gesture, rather than ask by the kg
with potatoes i normally count, 4 for you, 3 for me, 2 each for the kids, etc - i couldnt tell you how much they weight, just how much of a plate they would cover

That was what I meant - when he was assemblig the ingredients, wouldn't it be obvious "by eye" how many it would feed
