Fisherman's Pie

Options
I hope this is the right place to post this, apologies if not.

My son is cooking fisherman's pie at school tomorrow and as usual the school recipe doesn't say how many it will serve (I am useless and haven't a clue lol!) Could someone tell me how many they think this will serve:

400g potatoes
25g butter
200g white fish
50g-100g shellfish (optional)
Sauce:
150ml milk
25g flour
25g butter

I have had a look on the net but the recipes all seem to differ so much that I am none the wiser - 400g of potatoes on some recipes seems to serve 4 people but on others seems to only serve 2, but 200g of white fish seems to be well low

Many thanks for any help anyone can give.

This isn't going to help a lot, but it slightly depends on the size of dish he's going to use surely. You could have a big 'flat' pie, or a smaller-looking deeper one. Also, for example, have you ever had a frozen fish pie - they always seem to us to be too small for 2 and too big for one - I think portion control is very difficult. I'd say you might be able to feed 4 - 6 not very hungry people on this ?

I would say 2-3, as there seems to be too much potato for the amount of fish.

    It's only a game

See 2 replies and 2 different answers lol!:D Yep see that the size of the dish will make a difference too. Think I will give him some extra fish to put into it though, cos it really doesn't seem enough.

    Thanks

why doesnt the school say how many a recipe is supposed to serve?

surely thats all part of cooking, beling able to budget ingrediants and cook for the right number of people?

eew, the sauce is gonna be thick, with 25g of butter/flour, but only 150ml of milk. Id normally use 1pt with that amount of roux

i would say its gonna be a 2 person meal, as the potato quantity is enough for a family sized one, but the other ingredients are a bit tight

At dds school, most cookery lessons provide a dish large enough to feed one person, as they usually have to eat it as part of the lesson, and other students/teacher get to taste it - she very rarely makes something big enough to bring home (unless shes fibbing and just eating it, the mean girl!)

You would think they would wouldn't you? The only time that they do is when the recipe is taken from somewhere like the BBC Good Food site. It really is a pain cos half the time I really have no idea whether what he is bringing home is going to be enough to feed us or not. I know I should know, but I am useless with stuff like that - I can't just say that 500g of whatever will be enough for 4 people or whatever.

However it doesn't actually matter now as he won't be cooking tomorrow- DS has to weigh and prepare his own ingredients etc and he hasn't done it. He is always telling us that he doesn't need us reminding him and nagging him about things all the time so over the last few weeks we have stopped doing so - so tomorrow he is going to be very bored when his teacher makes him do lines in class!

if anything like me, its by eye work. i very rarely weigh things like potatoes, rice, pasta, fish or meat - my butcher always laughs when i ask for a joint of something, and give a 'so big' hand gesture, rather than ask by the kg

with potatoes i normally count, 4 for you, 3 for me, 2 each for the kids, etc - i couldnt tell you how much they weight, just how much of a plate they would cover

I'm lucky cos OH does most of the cooking in our house, but yeah for stuff like spuds, pasta and rice etc its just a case of by eye - you know how much you need for how ever many people. But that recipe last night just really threw me cos even though I'm abit useless at it - it just didn't seem right. Sort of glad in away now that he hasn't made it now that Flea has pointed out that the sauce was going to be way too thick - see I didn't even know that!

How about, making it out with a tin of sweetcorn or frozen peas?

No need to cook some veggies either, all in!
