Degree vs Experience

Hi, I've been having a debate with my husband about degrees/experience.

He doesn't have a degree, but does have at least 15 years working experience (more I think). He's considering leaving his job as he's unhappy, but doesn't think he stands a chance of getting another job as he doesn't have a degree.

I completely disagree.

What does everyone else think?

15 years work experience is probably going to count for quite a lot, regardless of his educational qualifications. However a degree plus 15 years work experience is better to have.

Who would you rather have? Someone fresh out of uni with no work experience in the field? Or someone with 15 years of experience? Id go with the 15 years experience.

Difficult question unless we know what industry / area he works in.

Why not look for his ideal job while he's still working and then he'll find out whether it's him or you who is right...

I hope he finds something great!!!

Well it's the same with my partner, he has 12 years experience in I.T and no formal qualification in it. He has been unemployed for nearly 7 months now after his contracting ending last year and every job he goes for nearly always say you need a degree in I.T for this poistion and he's only managed to get 5 interviews and applied for hundereds of jobs? No luck as of yet and when he asks for feedback they always say it weren't you it was because someone has a better level of education within the role..

So for me I would say it's better to have a qualification/degree.........

Experience is more important than a degree, but agree experience and a degree will always count for more.

Education is more important than experience

I say this because having a degree on your CV tells an employer that this person has taken time out to invest in his/her career by through means of education, also most degrees entitle you to work in different fields, I know people with english degree's who work in IT or finance departments, you wouldn't get that with someone without a degree
