I've just looked at "next" months budget (that's after pay day this friday) and what do I see?

    Total Income 100%
    Necessary Expenses 77%
    Discretionary Income 23%
    Investment Spending 7%
    Discretionary Income less Investments 16%
    Discretionary Spending 1%
Amount remaining to save or invest 2%

Do you know who much that 2% is???!!! £25.. wow wee.. a whole £25 to myself.. and those figs don't include petrol for the month!!!!

Geeze.. it's sad knowing 77% is spent even before you've touched it!!!

    Hi k9cuddles,
I mentioned to this to someone else before and a few people noted that they'd not thought about it like this before so maybe this is some help to you also?
    Good luck anyhow :)

Have you heard of the "pay yourself first" strategy? Take your savings off the top of each pay cheque and put it away tightly and the other (less important) people can then take their share (cc's, bills, loans) etc.

If you work for 7 hours each day, why not make sure that the first hour of each day that you work is for YOU and not anybody else. The next few hours are for bills and living expenses etc and the rest is for your debts. Work out your hourly rate, then multiply that by the avg. number of days you work, and transfer that amount to your savings account by S/O before you get to see the rest of the money :)

    Hi Amos :)

I had a play with this and can certainly see the logic of what you are suggesting. At the moment my priority is paying 'me' as little as possible and 'them (my debts) as much as possible. I can't wait for the date where 'them' will be gone and 'me' can get a payrise of around £700 a month! :rotfl:

    Hi K9

This is a cool thread! I've never looked at my money in terms of percentages before... since I paid off my debts, the breakdown is as follows:

    Salary = 100%
    21% Rent+Bills
17% Transport [Bus, Train and Driving Lessons!]
15% Discretionary Spending [incl. holidays, xmas/birthdays, clothes, Starbucks, newspapers/magazines etc]
    47% Savings*

From your signature, I notice your debt free date is July 2007 – that's not that far away! Having seen how much "necessary spending" you currently have [and I'm sure some of that goes on debt repayment], think how much MORE you'll have to save/invest or keep as discretionary spending once the debt's paid off!

    Briona

*used to go towards debt! HUMPH! What a waste!!!
If I don't respond to your posts, it's probably because you're on my 'Ignore' list.

Briona.. yeah I quiet like using %!! Yeah.. a hooge amount goes on my debt... I really want to stick to my target date (or nearly get bonuses in July!!! ) I know it's for the better but knowing I've got £25 next month to have "fun" is alittle disheartening!!! I do 20 hours OT a month as standard.. I guess I'll have to up the ante!

That's true, but although you have debts, if you're not paying interest on them I think it's a good idea to have savings in case you need them and delay your DFD by a few months for all that security and peace of mind. Plus your savings are earning interest all that time!
