  • Nice one Minty.

I DO know what you mean about "preferring" the overdraft... somehow it's all more real and urgent when it's there as your top-level figure you have to look at every time, and it's what the cash machine tells you every time you withdraw money, so it's related more directly to *real cash* than the silly old plastic...

I'm having to nearly always "pay off" my Smile credit card with my Smile overdraft... which since the overdraft is 1% cheaper does make sense, but I always feel a bit bad for not actually *paying it off*. However, I do get that sense of it being sort of neater, and more real, if I go overdrawn to do it.

So yeah - I know what you mean. Best of luck - and keep going! :D

Minty, it's good you are getting your debt down, & that it's making you feel good, because thats what it's all about. I see where you are coming from about paying the CC with a cheque, but when you say it feels right to you because it's your money, and your bank account, thats not strictly true. Any overdraft is not your money. It belongs to the bank, and thats why they charge exorbitant interest rates on it. Be very careful and scrutinize your statements that detail the charges. Most banks charge around 7% on authorized overdraft, but go 1 penny over the agreed amount and the rate shoots up to around 28%. Whats more they charge this rate on the WHOLE of the overdraft, not just the authorized bit. If you didn't already have an interest free CC, please think about getting one and get rid of the overdraft. If you did have an interest free CC, it doesn't seem logical to have paid it off BEFORE your overdraft. Sorry to sound a bit negative, but the whole idea of debtbusting is to do it sensibly and to give the banks and CC companies as little of you money as possible. Good luck
