Sofas won't go through door :(

Don't know where else to put this:

We're on the move, and our sofas won't go through our doorways. We can't leave them behind, and it seems now we can't take them with us. Other than chopping them up in situ, I haven't a clue. Such a shame, cos they're still in reasonable condition. Windows not an option! Any ideas?

We brought them indoors BEFORE we had the doorway installed - daft I know, but didn't think at the time. :(
  • It will cost you, but you could ask an upholsterer to take the arms off and then put them back on when you get to your new home. We had to do this once.

Have You tried standing them on one end (arm) and "swivelling" them through the doors? that's the usual trick with sofas.

we had a similar problem when we moved, we managed to get the sofas in the house but the removal men spend ages trying to get them out. Even with the front door off the task seemed impossible. So they sat down had a cup of tea during this time either the sofa shrunk or the doorway got wider because within minutes it was out in the lorry without any difficulties at all!!!

It would seem you have two options...either take the arms off as Mrsbojangles suggests, or dismantle the doorframes. I think it's a case of careful measuring just in case the dismantled doorway is still too small. That would probably ruin the decor and so on, and of course cost a few bob to get a joiner out.

You say the windows are no go. If they are double glazed then you could take out the beading and pass the chairs through - unless the actual window frames are too small, then you really have had it.

What about the new occupants, would they be interested in buying the sofas from you?

I feel so sorry for you, flipping sofas are so expensive.
  • OK - Been there done it too! Firstly take the door off. Then check to see if the Settee is longer than the door is high? If it is then you are stuffed - If not read on.

OK - Stand back and start lateral thinking, you need to get either the back or the base of the sofa through first, imagine how it will pivot on its arm as you swivel it around stood up????

    Get the idea yet?

If all else fails (yes I have done this - get it in its best last hope position and shoulder charge it) Sometimes they pop through.

Had a measure up: doorway is 27" wide x 77" high. Sofa is:: 40" front to back at it's widest point, and 68" wide. Even taking off the doorframe I don't think it's a goer :(

We'll be renting out the property, but they don't comply with regs, so can't leave them behind. We'll try taking the arms off first, and if it's still a problem, well that's the first step in dismantling them I suppose.

You know, it is possible to get a sofa through a door even when it's longer than the height of the door. When we moved to this house I was very hopeful that the sofa wouldn't go though the door (do not like it). Professional removers managed to get it in moving it about a cm at a time. It took them almost half an hour. There is no way we'll be able to get it out again without professionals though

It's not a moneysaver post, but I'd chop them up.

They don't meet regs, which means they must be 'old', and you don't want them.

I'd cut my losses and take a saw to them ...
