Help re a deceased' debts

Hi
A friend of mine lost her MIL recently. Whilst sorting her affairs it came to light that she had a credit card debt of £2500 and a loan of £5000.
IS my friend liable for these debts - there isnt enough left in her MIL estate to pay them. I thought that a credit card debt died with you (or is this wishful thinking?)
Thanks

I'm not a solicitor so I don't know, but I had a look on the internet, and from what I can see the estate has to pay its debts as far as it can, but unless the debts are in joint names then the creditors can't come after anyone else. I take it that your MIL didn't jointly own any property with her husband or someone else, because that would make it a bit more complicated.

Thanks - the lady lived in rented property on her own (she was a widow). She had very little money in her estate certainly not enough to pay off these 2 debts. My friend was just worried in case she had to settle them herself.0
