Whats the difference between DVD+r and DVD-r?
Ive had trouble burning dvd's and have noticed my burner says DVD+R but all my disc's are DVD-R. Should this affect anything?
Thanks

Unfortunately it will affect everything. They won't work. A DVD+R recorder needs DVD+R discs. Moreover, the DVD+R discs are less likely to play in standalone players, which is one reason why the Liteon 5005 DVD recorder (when it was £109 at Argos) was such a good choice, recording on DVD-R as well.0

Blank DVDs fall into the VHS/Beta wars scenario.
There are Three recording methods,
-R/RW, (the first, mainly Japanese/Korean manufacturers.) the cheapest, can be got in bulk around 12p a disk
+R/RW ( later method [Philips invention] supposedly more reliable) slightly dearer than - R, 15-20p a disc
RAM (random access) Used by Panasonic etc, and the most vesatile, hold more info, but most expensive, around £1.20 to £4 each for 4.7 gig (120 min), or £9 for double sided ones.Moi....?

Just an aside to this last point, at bigpockets.co.uk you can get the RAM discs in a cartridge for £2.89(single side 4.7GB) and £3.49 for a double side (9.4GB) disc currently, absolutely excellent value IMO, been using a double sided one in the Panasonic for a few months now, great for being able to switch disc over quickly if need to record something else0 -

DVD+R was supported initially by most major manufactures, with the price reduction in Multi-format drives, they haven't dropped support but have at least cottoned on that people want a choice.

Ive got the Liteon and did a bit of research about blank DVDs before I bought some, but not enough it seems. I chose +R because it seems that this gives you thumbnails so you can skip to the scene you want. I understood -R didn't do this but you had this facility to record from any place on the disc, like winding on a tape. My kids wanted the +R discs based on this.
Have I got this right? Is it likely that one format will become obsolete? Which one? In other words, if we want to record something for long term use, which is the best bet?

I have a Toshiba stand alone DVD player and its very particular about which blanks it will play. I was told that this is due to the spectral range of the laser, i.e. the colour of the laser against the ink colours on the DVD.
I use http://www.videohelp.com/ to check disk compatibility.Watch out for Freddie the Fox at the Shay !!0 -
Yes, a bit depressing... sorry for all that have that problem.
But you can pick up multi format DVD writers for £40 now..
So its worth investing for all those DVD back ups
as mentioned earlier, https://www.ukdvdr.co.uk is about as cheap as you will get, and do next day delivery as standard.
Then go to https://www.dvdshrink.org and you will be able to download a small program that lets you backup your dvd movies.Be nice0 -

The beauty of the Liteon 5005 standalone DVD recorder is that it will record on all the main formats including DVD-R and DVD+R. Which Liteon do you have?
My Liteon 5005 gives a thumbnail menu on DVD-R as well as DVD+R.0
