This can't be right?!?! Can it??

I've recently submitted my 05/06 tax return - thought I had done it ages ago but obv not - only earn £80 on top of my 'normal' job from mystery shopping. Invoice has come this morning and I owe them £1165.33 apparently!!!! !!!!!! - From earing £80 I now have to pay them almost 15times that??

Have they made a mistake?? Just wondered if someone could have a look before I call them??!?!?

Does this bill also include your liabilities from 07-08 and payments on account due for 09-10? Without seeing a computation of your liability it's hard t advise.

    Thanks for the quick reply.

    Nope it doesn't.

    It says:

brought forward from previous statement - £195.84 (I'm assuming this is the charge for not filling in on time)
Balancing payment due for 05/06 £838.64
    interest £130.85

    Total: £1165.33

I gave up the mystery shopping and stuff a year later as it just seemed tooo much trouble filling in the forms and stuff. The year 06/07, I earnt £20 and the tax man owed me £0.27p.

Do you have a copy of the submitted Return or can you reply with all the figures on the Return?

Someone at HMRC may have keyed a figure in wrong, did they send a calculation or just a statement?

They just sent me a statement and no I don't have a copy of the tax return, sorry.
Basically, I was working full time £13500 and mystery shopping at weekends £80.
Can I ask for a calculation?? Is there a template letter or should I just call them and ask?

    Thanks

You have used all your allowances up at your PAYE employment so £80 x 52 weeks per year = £4160 which would have been taxable at basic rate. Basic rate in 2005/2006 was 22% so £4160 @22% = £915 tax due. If you claimed some expenses against your self employment or didn't work every weekend then that would have reduced that figure.

It was only £80 over the full year!!

I just rang them and apparently I haven't noted down how much I had already paid in tax through my employment, so I've got to dig out my P60 or last wage slip or something and write to them.

Easy as really - should have done that first!! hehe!

Pam, I think the £80 is for the whole year.

Do you have your P60 or whatever you used to get the employment figures, I think the tax deducted should have been about £1,640?

Yes, while I was reading through the thread I thought that is what happened. Hopefully it will be sorted out very soon. They are usually quite good at this. (just takes them forever if you want refund!!:-))
