  • Just had fruit cobbler made with Bramley apples and some cinnamon added to the flour. Was delicious! Thanks, kids loved it.Only thing was the middle wasn't cooked, was OK though because I want to serve the rest tomorrow,so I will cook it some more.We ate round the edges. How long do you cook it for Black Saturn? I cooked it for 40 mins, the apples were nice and brown, but the batter not very.Dish was about 10 inches in diameter.
  • Thanks for the malt loaf recipe :T mine is far more complicated which means I can hardly ever be bothered to make it so I'm looking forward to trying yours.
How do you manage to make one loaf of bread last you and your kids all week? Do you freeze half of it? Is your five a day fruit and veg additional to your shopping list?
I've reduced the cost of my shopping by using recipes from the OS board but I still can't get my weekly spend down to anywhere near yours, I think you put more effort into it than me. Note to self: must try harder :embarasse

It's usually the fruit juice which makes it soggy in the middle rather than the mixture not being cooked. If you use 'drier' fruit you might find that it all cooks properly. I couldnt really give you times as I just keep checking it every few minutes but you could try doing it on one gas mark lower so hopefully it will cook the middle before the outside.

We dont eat that much bread between us so 1 loaf does last us a week and I keep it in the fridge which keeps it fresher.

Our fruit and veg portions come out of the selection of vegetables and the fruit cobblers in the shopping lists. Sorry I forgot to add them to the menu but you are meant to have a serving of vegetables with each meal :o

Whew, this thread suddenly grew! Will read through it in a mo, but just wanted to say that the fruit cobbler went down a treat for pudding this evening, and the malt load looks brilliant - dd1 and dh tried it and I've now had to hide it to make sure that it lasts until I do the packed lunches tomorrow morning!

    Thanks so much!

  • thanks Black-Saturn. The recipes sound lovely.

I too can't wait to try the fruit cobbler. Can I ask anyone a silly question but if I decide to use fresh cooking apples rather than tinned fruit will the apple cook properly or do I need to pre-cook it before putting it on top?
  • I've just made it with fresh apples.I put them on top of the batter raw and they cooked fine.Next time I might push them down into the batter more.
  • Yes my kids eat all those particular meals. They are not keen on stew and dumplings so I dont really cook that.

My children get a free school dinner so I only have to think about lunch for me during term time.

How does someone qualify for free school dinners?
