I think the point that perhaps ought to be made is that supermarkets were once our "saving grace" and a lot of local shops went out of business because they couldn't compete on price. Now we have the situation whereby supermarkets are actually dearer than local shops but we don't realise it becuase we have been suckered into only shopping at supermarkets. OK, its hard to buy everything at local shops and there's the old one stop shop argument for S/Ms, BUT I'll give you 3 examples from my local high st. 6 Eggs, free range, Sainsburys, £1.36. Our local butcher, £1, how big a gap is that? Loo rolls, 12 pack, Morrisons, something like £4.50; our local shop, £1.99. Oranges, Morrisons 27p EACH. Our local veg shop, 6 for £1. I know you savvy savers will know all this stuff, but perhaps ML could run a programme like that and really nail the lie that S/Ms are cheap!

Can I also say that I use, for example, nothing but value tinned tomatoes and in a pasta sauce, believe me once you've added in the lovely garlic and herbs and a dab of butter, no one will know. Break down this mindset - liberate your spending guys!

I found the dinner a bit mad really. Do rich people have cottage pie in the week same as us normal working folk?
I'd have though they'd have shown how to cut the cost of a lobster thermador or fillet steak.
I'd have found that more believable, and I'd have liked to see how it was done too so I could do it.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Old style MoneySaving boards.

the best bit was when the guy called the peas petit poos, instead of petits pois, or even better, peas man!
Re steak, See my previous post, try your local butcher for steak, not only will he be cheaper, the cuts will be better and he can give you advice on how to cook it.

I can't see the saving of buying cheap mince, surely after all the fat is drained away the true cost of the actual meat will be the same/similar??
I avoid cheap mince and often buy good quality when it's reduced and freeze it.
Our Sainsburys are good for this, recently I got 6 x packs of lamb mince (500g/1lb??)for 30p per pack and they were on a 2 for ??? offer and when they went through they actually worked out at 6p per pack. :rotfl: Normally this offer has stopped working, but the discount came off. :j
Today I'm cooking a spag bol with Sainsburys "taste the difference" mince, reduced from £3.19 down to £1.19.
I wonder if Martin eats cheap fatty mince, and if he does, does he get a celeb chef to cook it for him.

I too buy good quality meat when its been reduced & freeze it.I get some real bargains at my local Booths supermarket - the meat is always sourced locally, or organic. The other week i got 3 pork joints for £7 - it cost that for 1 of them!
One thing i will say though that i`ve tried really cheap tea bags and they were nothing like the ones that family had last night for 30 odd p, mine were full of the dustings from the tea leaves.0 -

They are some big savings!
Unfortunately now it's too late where I live to shop in the smaller shops, living in a big town, there isn't a greengrocers or butchers... I woud love to start shopping in a greengrocers again and getting my veg in paper bags to avoid all the horrible plastic boxes in the supermarket...0 -

After comparing ingredients the other week in Morrisons, I actually selected the value ones over the more expensive tin - as the expensive tin also contained sugar and salt (which I despise and don't want in my dinner!) and the value one was just tomatoes/juice.0
