    Hiya

Sorry I may be being really dense but I don't get it! Love the premise - real old style! But why does it have to be 50's style? :)

    Hi mummytoash,

Why do they have to be 1950's recipes? Is this a condition your parents have set?

If you have a look on google there are lots of links that should help.

I remember puds like oven-baked rice/sago/tapioca pudding; stewed fruit with custard; apple pie/crumble/cobbler with custard; jelly and/or fruit and evap; steamed jam/lemon/fruit sponge with custard; a big jam tart made on a tin place with strips of pastry twisted to divide it up into portions etc.

Evening meals for us often consisted of things like liver, onions, mash and carrots; left over meat from the sunday roast sliced with chips and peas (on a monday - washday!); kippers with bread and butter (yuk); tripe (double yuk); battered fish, chips and peas (fridays); sausage, egg and chips; sometimes there would be chops on a saturday served with chips and peas; yellow fish with mash or just bread and butter; and grandad loved his pig's trotters (triple yuk).

    Parents reliving their youth?

For me it would be the 60's and early 70's.
  • yeah. the only condition for the money is that all meals need to be 1950's style. they say that might get me n ds to eat better plus i love a challenge.

Rationing was still in force up until 1954, so if you want ration book recipes look here ;)Have a look in charity shops for old cookery books of the period. I found a copy of Good Housekeeping Cookery in Colour for a couple of quid which was published in the 50s.

If you think 50s food sounds a bit dull and flavourless point out to your parents that Elizabeth David's A Book of Meditarranean Food was published in 1950. This is a classic of food literature and has recipes for hummus, pasta, ratatouille, paella, pilaffs and pizza.

Please forgive me if I'm wrong, but I am beginning to feel very puzzled about mummytoash. Are you real or are you a journalist seeking stories? We've had three separate threads in recent weeks, in which the type of problem you have with affording food, as does the budget, keeps changing but it is always a real challenge. Given that you've started threads on this board before, I can't see why you started by asking whether you've come to the right place.
    Mortgage started on 22.5.09 : £129,600
    Overpayments to date: £3000
    June grocery challenge: 400/600

There's definitely something odd going on. Most of your threads have been merged into the storecupboard challenge Mummytoash but you have, in the last 2 weeks said that you need urgent help as you have £30 to buy food, then no money to buy food and no food in the house. 2 days later you have a full freezer and storecupboard and no money, then you have £12 to buy food for a week. Now you have £50 but your parents have placed a bizzarre restriction on how you spend it.

If you are struggling with money and budgeting, I feel for you, really, but you never come back to your threads or thank anyone for help and it's just beginning to look strange. I'm not judging you but can you clarify what your situation is and we can help you. You were offered lots of help to use up the massess of food you had in your freezer last week so I would tell your parents that much as it is nice of them to help you, it is ridiculous of them to restrict what you can eat so thanks but no thanks. ;)
