feed 2 for £10 a week Pesco-vegetarian

Options
My boyfriend is unemployed and I am a student so we're very strapped for cash right now. We share the house with our housemates so freezer space is tight. Has anyone got any meal ideas or shopping list ideas on a £10 a week budget?

See if you can shop in the reduced sections of the supermarket - for bread, fish, etc You'll find that your £10 will go much further then.

What about making your own fishcakes or fish pie - especially if you can find fish that's been reduced to clear (whoopsied) in the supermarket. All you'd need is some mashed potato, the fish, finely chopped onion, chives etc. I'm sure you'll find recipes online.

Keep your eyes peeled for bread that's been reduced to clear and you'll be able to make toast till the cows come home.

PN has suggested veggie soups, but you could also make curried veg and even bung in some lentils too (whether it's lentil soup or lentil & Veg curry). What about macaroni or pasta with a cheese sauce?

If you can find cheap veg, you can make your own pasta sauce - tomatoes (tinned or fresh), grated carrots, finely chopped onion, garlic, chilli etc - then blitz it down with a handblender and it's a lot cheaper than a jar of pasta sauce.

Shop carefully and you'll find that tenner goes a long way to feeding you both :)

    Hope this helps

pasta with tuna and tomato sauce
    veg curry, rice and dahl
    spanish omelette
    egg chips and beans
    cheese and potato pie
veg shepards pie with brown lentils
veg and chickpea tagine with couscous
tinned salmon fishcakes and fresh veg
stir fry veg with cashew nuts with noodles of rice

If you are short of freezer space then tinned beans and fish will be your friends! Fill up on carbs like pasta, rice, cous cous and bread. Add vitamins with fresh seasonal veg and fruit (buy from the market if you have one). Lentils are cheap, tasty and full of protein.

Frozen quorn pieces are also £1 in asda. I used the whole bag to make a curry the other night with 79p jar own brand korma sauce, one onion, few mushrooms, frozen peas and extra milk as it was quite thick. Served with own brand nan bread. There was enough for at least 4 big portions and it was really yummy

erm its kinda made up so changes everytime but a basic tomato sauce base (onion, garlic, celery, carrot finely chopped, tinned toms), morrocan style spices (cumin, ginger, cinnamon, chilli if you like) cooked down slowlt so its really tasty big chunks of seasonal veg (root veg in winter, courgettes and peppers in summer) and a tin of chickpeas, stir in a smidge of honey to taste. Serve with cous cous with a few toasted pinenuts if you feel flush!

  • dried pulses are much cheaper than cans, but you need to think ahead and soak them in advance! There is a pulses thread on here somewhere, so that might give you some ideas.

Can you grow some herbs on the windowsill? That is a good cheap way to make pasta sauces more interesting! You can make Yummy pasta sauces with value tomatoes and some frozen veg and herbs.

Oh and there is a vegetarian parnasan type cheese called vegetalia which I get as you don't need as much of it to grate over pasta etc. I think it's less than £1.50 a block, and it does 2 of us 2-3 weeks. Much longer than £1.50 of chedar would last us!
