Sainsbury's Basics Apples

Just bought some Sainsbury's basics eating apples, loose , 63p per kilo and tucked away on the bottom shelf. Thought this was really cheap so bought one, tasted it and then went back to buy a big bag full. They are lovely and crisp and juicy and absolutely fine. Put back the more expensive Bramleys and will have go at cooking with these apples instead.
They are quite big apples and there seems to be a couple of varieties within the box.
Have just done a price comparison with Asda and Tesco and obviously they are all price matching. Interestingly, these loose apples at 63p per kg in each of the 3 supermarkets are all cheaper per kilo than the Value and Smartprice ranges.

The sainsbury basics fruit and veg is always really good. I bought some of the plums last week and made a crumble with one lot and jam with the other. The full price Tesco plums were foul, solid one day and liquid the next so I will stick with Sainsbury from now on.
Will keep an eye out for the apples, thanks0 -
I buy them all the time .
They have the equivilant in all the supermarkets I use for about the same price.
They are usually jonagold variety.
Often they are huge so there are not many to a kilo but still work out cheaper.
Could be wasteful if your family dont finish the apple but mine all scoff the lot !
Hadn't thought of cooking with them.
Might give that a go as my frozen apples from the tree in the garden are all gone now.0 -
I just did a blog post about this sort of thing!
I have been buying the "basics" line of fruit and veg basically since they started the line and am very happy 99% of the time with not only quality but especially the price. We have a market not far from us and I do get the majority of my fruit and veg there (their prices are very competitive) but if I'm instore and need something right away I don't have any qualms about purchasing the "less than perfect" produce.0 -
Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere(please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. I saw these a few weeks back, just goes to show that you shold always check the prices but people do not have the time to look these days I think.
Make sure you keep your fruit in the fridge as it will last much longer!!
Except bananas as they go black unless wrapped in foil which is not that MSE in my opinion.0 -
I have been buying the Basics apples for quite a while now and they are lovely, really crisp and juicy.I also like Basics red grapes, although I have to get to my local store early because they seem to sell out quickly.Mixed peppers are good too.0

I am sat here at my desk eating basics plums and apples, they are both very tasty and last well considering I keep them in my desk drawer and not in the fridge.0

I do think it depends on exactly which type of fruit and veg you buy from the basics range, some are great, others it really depends on the time of year and then there are those that it doesn't matter what time of year it is, they are still not worth it in my opinion.
Sainsburys melon for example, I have had at full price- lovely and sweet, and the basics which whatever variety the one in the basics is (eg honeydew or centelope) they are just tasteless and not at all juicy.
I do like some of the apples, but it is a matter of picking and looking at which variety is in the pack, also if you don't mind them being teaspoon sized apples!
The pears tend to be ok, as do the tomatos and peppers, but the fresh berries I think need for you to wait for it to be the right time of year as they just are not sweet enough for some reason unless its the right time of year- despite being shipped from thousands of miles around the globe!
Though having said that I may have especially sensitive taste being that I eat probably around 10 plus portions of fresh fruit and veg every day.0
