Lemma's Secondary Tax Bill Induced LBM - OMG

OMG:eek:
Just returned from seeing my accountant. I have an eye wateringly horrible tax bill due at the end of this month. I can't even say the figure, never mind write it down cos i feel just a tad traumatised.
I was off on maternity leave in the previous tax year and due to other factors only actually worked for 4 out of the 12 months. That meant that my payments on account were low. I have had a much better 12 months and my income has trebled - so i now have a balancing payment due AND a payment on account for 31st January.
My DH is a student who will start a 12 month placement this summer. So we have no income from him. He has also just been diagnosed with a progressive brain disorder, which is genetic and therefore possibly hereditary. We have 2 children and we are just coming to terms with ALL the implications of this.
Our outgoings are not too bad, i have shaved off a lot since i posted my SOA about 2 years ago. I earn more than most so cannot complain too much, although the money comes in erratically. A bit like feast or famine. Its not my outgoings as such that bother me just this BL**dy tax.
I am part of the PAD challenge, the pay £20K by Christmas 09 challenge and i do the small DFW every day.
I need you all to kick me right up the ar*e to get this bill cleared as quickly as possible. My family need to know that I am not going to go under either financially or emotionally.
I am at grave risk of both at the moment.
Sorry its been such a long post.
Lemma xx
I will update the thread with every payment i make to them. It will be on the PAD as well.

Hi ...sending you hugs as think you could do with a few!!!...sorry to hear about your DH and possibly the children..hopefully they won't have inherited it.
Going onto the tax ..have you phoned the tax office to see if you can pay in installments over a longer period of time.I know a few people that have.
It may be an idea to put something away every week in a seperate account towards your tax so that your sorted this time next year.I know how you feel as I've just paid mine and DHs but was lucky as I'd put enough away.
I wish you luck in paying it.0 -
Hello lemma - just wanted to send you a hug.Debt free and Keeping on Track0
-
Thanks - i am trying to pay off about £100 every other day or so in the PAD thread. Trust me it will take an awful lot of £100's to get out of this hole.
I have been amazed how many little "nothings" i have paid out for over the years. I call them "nothings" because i have nothing to show for it at all. And it really mounts up!
Over the past 2 or 3 weeks i have stopped buying mags, coffee from coffee machines at work, sandwiches at lunch time etc The difference in my bank account has been HUGE! All of those little payments out on "nothings" add up to a a whole load of money missing from your accounts, and a feeling of "where has it all gone?
Re my OH, i was watching " short Stay in Switzerland"last night with my hubby. He did not want to see it cos it was too real for us at the moment. I was blubbing for ages and then stayed awake a while thinking about it.
We do not yet know what the future holds for him, and how bad the progression will be. We are waiting for the test results. They will take a few weeks as they are rarely done tests.
We are going to live day by day. But i need this debt....GONE!:rolleyes:2013 TARGET £30k

Hugs lemma, sorry to hear about your OH, I couldn't watch the program on TV last night...we have a relative that has been diagnosed with PSP, it was about the time that the lady in the story hit the papers.
When is your year end, make sure you get the next lot of accounts done as soon as possible and you may then be able to reduce the POA/balancing charges.Official DFW Nerd Club - Member no: 203.0 -

Thanks for that I will. Just said exactly the same thing to my accountant this morning. We shall be living off bread and water for the next year!:p Seriously, its a good job we have halved our grocery bill. Eating better too. Every little helps.
My Oh's condition is like PSP but linked to the cerebellum. You see the crowds parting when he is walking cos he looks like he has had one too many. He does not drink either. So he gets the scowls without having had the benefit of the drink!!! Bless him. xx

Don't forget it might be possible to reduce your payments on account if this year hasn't been great so far, although of course if it has been good you would just be storing up the same problem for yourself.
I'd second the suggestion to talk to the tax office if any problem, we got into a bit of a muddle like this a few years ago and they were pretty good about spreading out payments, though of course we paid interest etc...
I know how horrible it is getting a bill like this, lots of luck0 -
Just spotted this from Seawyxn on antoher thread...mgiht be useful, sorry would have pasted in full but I'm not sure how to do itThis year HMRC are allowing people to pay in instalments if you can't pay the full whack in January. They do charge 7.9% interest though. See http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/pbr2008/business-payment.htm - I phoned the number half way down that page and they were very sympathetic and helpful and they are letting me pay in six instalments. So they may well agree to let you pay in Feb, or whatever would suit you better.0

I am so sorry to read your news Lemma, I lurk lots but rarely post in case I inadvertantly offend anyone - too much of a softie you see, I'd be so upset if someone I didn't even know were upset at me. But you're situation has brought me out of hiding as I just want to wish you lots of luck with that lottery win
. You could definitaly deserve a change of luck. I really hope your children are clear and your DH's progression is slllloooooww! Thinking of you.

I need to tot up each month what I have paid them.
But, if any of you know the winning lottery numbers or a benefactor that may take pity  then please point him/her/it my way. I'm not proud, I'll take charity!!!
I still need to stay focussed on my cc as well though and not get behind with the usual direct debits and other commitments.
Blimey this being a grown up sucks sometimes!!!!!
