how's the best way to ice a number 2 cake

hi all, calling all cake decorators help please lol......hoping someone can help with dilemma.
im wanting to ice a number 2 preferably in rolled icing. i know butter cream easier, but i think its looks nicer smooth. icing with rolled is not my best acheivement lol, i iced a square 8 inch, rolled it out im not sure how thick, ive these rings you put on end of pin, and it was the thickest ring. as i lifted it off worktop it started stretching and was cracked on the cake, but i healed it lol....next time im gonna roll it thicker. also i used a pack of tesco's fondant icing, which i found really sticky before id even coloured it. so would it be better to get a load of the pre coloured packs from cakeshop? or is there a better white icing to use 9asda didnt seem as sticky, i might be wrong?). can i make it myself?? ive never tried to yet.

regards melie

LOL I thought that too  .
I would say maybe some butter icing as its quite easy to spread and does not run too much.
You can buy ready made stuff but its easy enough to make. You could add colour too.

Melie I would ice the top first leaving a little overhang then use strips for the sides and use piping around the edges
Well actully I would probably wimp out and use buttercream!!
    Good luck with it!

    Hi

Just a quick comment about Tescos icing - I make a lot of cakes, and it is in my opinion the worst icing ever. I would rather make my own (which i hate doing) than use theirs.

When i make cakes if i need a dark colour i buy it precoloured from the cake shop, otherwise i colour it myself.

I always cover my cakes in one go, i find that covring them with strips is too time consuming. Try and cover it the same way you would a square. Also google how to cover novelty cakes and look at some of the designs. Wilton's website is also good.

Good luck, im making a Pooh bear cake tomorrow night for daughters 2nd birthday Sunday.

    • once you have your 2 shape, measure the width and length with a piece of string.
    • cover the cake in buttercream (thin layer to help the icing stick)
    • roll out the ready roll icing to the required shape, using your strings as a guide.
    • place the icing over the cake
    • smooth with your hands from the topdown, removing any air pockets.
    • trim any excess of around the edges.
