I'm feeling very pleased with myself - made marmalade for the first time and it's yummy! Just been back to the supermarket for 5 more kilos of seville oranges - I'm hooked!Old style weight loss challenge, start date 14/7/13, starting wt: 14 st 12, goal 12lb in 11 weeks:
Total weight loss to date: 12lb0 -
I've just got back from town and noticed that the bag of sevilles that I bought the other day had been opened, and there was a little pile of pips left on the breadboard. My son (18) loves oranges and we do have some jaffas in the dining room, but he'd obviously seen the sevilles and had one of those. I'd love to have seen his face when he tasted the seville! Fortunately, there are still enough to make my marmalade.0

I've been asked on another thread about marmalade
I use Delia'a basic recipe. As this is Burns Night, I made whisky marmalade today, adding a Tbsp of black treacle with the sugar and 150ml Famous Grouse just before potting up
And even better - my Sevilles were £1.25/kg from the farm shop :j Can anyone beat that

Mine were the same price from the local fruit stall in Liverpool
I notice alot of supermarkets selling Sevilles as 'marmalade oranges' clearly because modern supermarket shoppers won't know what sevilles are for and take them back when they discover that they strip the enamel from your teeth ha ha ha0 -
just made up first batch of marmalade.. made loads of jam in summer so thought i'd give it a go..
Used my new preserves pan I treated myself with for xmas (sad i know)..
Tastes lovely, only problem I had was getting it to set, had to boil for 3 times as long till it went crinkly on plate, thinking it was too much liquids, as I reduced by a quarter before it was ready..
Fingers crossed it sets ok, cold plate test hasn't failed me yet!!0 -

The first lot I bought were £2.49 for 3lbs. I bought two bags, but didn't quite use a whole one (and I made 8 jars) so I put the rest in the freezer, then last week they were all reduced to £1.25 for the 3lb bags, so I bought two more to go in the freezer! At least if I run out of marmalade during the year I can still make some - or I might have enough to make some next season, then buy next year's at the reduced rate for the freezer.0 -
I pickled some red cabbage at the weekend.....got 5 jars from 1 cabbage!!
I also got some beetroot to pickle but I've never done it before. DO I need to cook it first? Or any suggestions of a chutney or something I could make with it? I didn't buy loads as I'd rather try a small batch of something first and see how I get on!0 -

Yes .... boil until soft.
Then put on rubber gloves and peel the skin off.
I made THIS recently...
The first lot was a bit aniseedy for me, the second lot, I added a bit more orange, and less star anise, and it was lovely :drool:0
