    Morning !!

    Last night I sytarted reading this thread and I can now say I am addicted !! Off to look for blackberries today so we can have some yummy jam !! I also want to try Lemon Curd and then Marmalade when the Saville Oranges come back in !!

    Been and dug out my copy of Mrs Beatons Jams, Pickles and Preserves book, so I am going to have a good read of that too.

    Oooh what a fantastic thread! :T

    Yesterday I made 4lb of Tomato Chutney with the tomatoes from teh garden. Next on my list is Spiced Plum Chutney (I bought some last year in a deli in Devon whilst on holiday, it was beautiful but cost £3 for a 1/2 lb jar, I'm sure I can do better than that!). Then I will be making loads of Apple Chutney with the cooking apples from my boss' garden which she kindly gives us every year. I use them for my mincemeat too. I also need to make some more marmalade as the stock I made in January is running very low, obviously I will need to use Mamade at this time of year. Am also planning on making some lemon curd soon.

    I love the satisfied feeling you get from looking at all your filled jars lined up!

    Not sure if this is OT - sorry if it is.

    Does anyone have a tried and tested recipe for mincemeat ?? Would love to try that too this year instead of the shop bought stuff.

    Where in Morrisons will I find the 6p curry sauces?


    in my store they are literally hidden on the bottom shelf behind one of those triangular shaped baskets that they put special offers in. you have to physically move it out of the way each time you want to buy any! look in the sauces/foreign food section in my local shop the dried beans and such like are on one side of the aisle and on the other you find the curry, chinese etc sauces and things like tortillas and fajita kits the curry sauce should be hidden around there, most likely on the bottom shelf

    i know that the really cheap curry sauce varies from different stores in price not just between tesco/asda/sainsbury/morrisons but within the same chain so your morrisons might sell it a bit cheaper but still i'd pay 30p for this sauce if i had to (i'd just buy less of it ;)) it's really not bad at all, lightly spicy. i add a little coconut cream most times as i prefer creamy korma style curry but you could easily spice it up more with some cumin and/or chillis
  • The rowan tree in my garden has had berries for the very first time in years (due to some fanatical pruning 2 years ago!) - does anyone have any recipes using these?

    well i do unfortunately they are all printed out not links however if you search for rowan recipes you'll find tons of them that's what i did

    one tip with rowans, freeze them for a week before use. not only does this convert the chemical in them that makes them give you a sick tummy if you eat them raw (cooking also fixes this problem) but it also makes them sweeter!

    you can use rowans in chutney, hedgerow jam and can make jam with it though you'll need a lot of apples and sugar to make them palatable as they are very tart. i'd reccomend adding a bit of baking soda to the batches to reduce the amount of sugar you'll need to use (both for your health and to save money!) i'll have to do a thorough google hunt but you can use at least 1tsp with no problems you may need a bit more depending on how much fruit and how tart it is. the bicarb neutralises some of the acid thus making it taste sweeter with less sugar!

    I didn't realise you could use rowan berries, the neighbours tree which overhangs our garden is covered in them, think I will ask them if we can pick some.
