I fancy making this recipe for xmas hampers and I am wondering if it must be made in kilner jars or whether the big ragu type jars with lids would be OK.
Provided you adopt good hygiene, any jars will be fine for this Christmas.
I've made Delia's Spiced Pickled Pears in the past and they were divine. In fact, you've reminded me to try them again, especially as I live in "Orchard Country" on the Sussex/Kent border.Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac0 -

Sorry I forgot to put the recipe I was looking at! Have edited the post now. That's good news re. jars as I can collect some big jars between now and say, October and make some. Thanks!:D0 -
Last year I picked loads of sloes to make sloe gin, but next to the sloe bushes were some bullace bushes. So as an experiment I made bullace gin, which was amazing and much sweeter than sloe gin. Also I made bullace jam which was lovely and tangy a little bit like damson jam. I'll definitely be making more of both this year and floss2's recipe for sloe and bramley apple jelly sounds like a winner too!0

Is there a recipe index anywhere?

As I went to unhook a trolley from one of the bays at Sainsbury on Saturday, I saw the lady in front of me pick something out of the trolley that she was unhooking and with the comment "That needs putting in the bin!" - she left the offending item at the side of the trolley line.
My eagle eye spotted that she had dumped a long glass tube of Silver Spoon vanilla pods - brand new, pristine with seal intact. I would guess that it had been accidentally left behind by a previous shopper
I didn't like to leave it there all lost and alone so I [STRIKE]picked[/STRIKE] [STRIKE]it up [/STRIKE] wombled it and brought it home to "do summat with"
There are two long pods in it - I'd love to have a go at doing some flavoured vodka or something similar for Christmas presents.
Any ideas please?:heartpuls The best things in life aren't things :heartpuls

I'm just horrified that someone thought they should go in the bin when there's nothing wrong with them! They're quite expensive.
I believe you can put a whole pod in a jar of sugar and it will give you vanilla sugar for baking and will last ages.0 -
Anyone found the cheapest pickling vinegar lately? We have lots of shallots from the garden that I want to pickle.Weight loss - here we go again - watch this space!

Spiced pickled pears sound devine. Thank you for sharing. A must for me for Christmas now. I priced up the ingredients. It will come to £10 but I just can't not try it out. How many standard jam jars would the delia recipe make? I have to tell you that I am a complete novice at preserving but would like to learn0

I agree!
I've only ever used them to flavour sugar as you have suggested.0
