Yep look like quinces to me. They are extremely hard to cut which is also a giveaway! I make quince jelly with mine and then use the leftover pulp to make quince cheese (membrillo) in jars. I have also tried spreading the paste, drying it, cutting it into tablets which then makes a nice sweet pastille or something you can drop into a bowl of porridge, rice pudding etc.
Thanks for the info on damsons. I put the pulp into a colander but didn't try pushing the pulp through, so next time I will try to, as I have spent far too long picking the stones out! I used 1kg damsons, 400ml water and 950g sugar (I don't like things too sweet) and have been really impressed with the result! Sets very easily and I have used it as a replacement for cranberry sauce, so becomes multi purpose in our household!
Can't believe I've nearly run out of jars again, so back on the scrounge.MFiT-T3 Number 61 Reduce mortgage by £50000Mar 13 £5660/11.32% June 13 £12513/25.03% Sept 13 £16951/33.90% Sept 14 £38391/78.78% paid offMFiT-T2 Number 34 Reduce mortgage by £66471Dec 12 100% paid off!0 -
Hello everyone!
I've just started on my preserving journey and am enjoying it very much. There's a cooking apple tree in the garden, and the pie's and crumbles were starting to have a negative effect on the waistline so am attempting something different. So far I've made two jars of apple and sloe jelly with sloes foraged from the nearby bridal path. It's very tasty but very sweet, little less sugar next time I think.
I've also made some apple chutney that is maturing in the shed, along with some spicy preserved pears. Today I've done a sweet mango and apricot chutney and was planning on a normal mango chutney and some apple jelly, but I've run out of jars.
I'm wondering though, where do you find more fruit? I found a small blackberry patch whilst out hunting for sloes but I'm a loss of how to find patches. Would it be worth approaching an allotment group?0 -

Hi.
This is a huge thread & I need to ask a question about apples.
My neighbour has given me 7lbs of cooking apples. I suppose I could make the whole lot into a pie/crumble filling but I'd quite like to make a chutney or xmas mincemeat.
Does anyone have any thrifty recipes?
Thank you.0 -
Blondy I find the chilli jam is quite a loose set not like a jelly its more a loose relish if that makes sense?
